ST225/75R15 Load range D

I see a lot of issues with Towmaster as well as most other ST branded tires and am curious as to how many issues there are with this size and load range. From what I have seen, most of the issues are in the "E" range on larger tires. I am just curious to see if the "D" range tires have such issues.
Thanks,
Curly
  • IMO it is definitely worth going up from load range D to E. You get a tire with additional belting. It is a heavier carcass. The construction features that make it capable of higher internal forces (holding higher air pressure), gives it greater resistance to outside forces as well, such as hitting potholes and curbs.

Just remember, you have not increased the GVWR of your trailer. You're still limited by the axles, wheels, suspension, and frame. What you have done is increase the safety margin of the tire capacity. It does not cost very much extra per tire, and is money well spent. Use your existing wheels.

Thanks for the replies. My tires are hitting three years old now with very little miles on them so I think before long I will upgrade and replace them before we have issues. I always go 65 MPH or less and make sure the air is at the max before we leave. I am not sure what brand to look at now since all are made off shore.

Fatal mistake number one with ST tires, is thinking about replacing them and not doing it ASP. One after making that statement and not carrying through is soon chinabombed.

Put Maxxis M8008 or Carlisle Radial RH LRE tires on it now!

Hell has now froze over, you are recommending ST tires?

In a 15" tire, Chris' suggestion is probably the best. The Maxxis has had a decent rep for years and the newer Carlisles are catching up. Only other option is to jump to a 16" wheel and LTs, which would be overkill, but a =lot= better than STs.

Curly, my 11,300 GVW FW is placarded for D tires. I lost my first tire on I-17 at Black Canyon City in my 2nd year and < 1,000 total miles. In the 3rd year the other 3 went belly up all at the same time. I replaced with a set of E tires because I'd started reading the fora here and educated myself a bit. Those lasted me almost 7 years before all 4 separated within weeks of each other; none catastrophically, thank goodness. Total mileage on these was < 3,500 miles. I put on a set of Carlisle RH E's in '13 and have < 2,000 miles on them, and they =look= good, so far.

Moral of the story...jump up a rating over the placard, and you'll have a lot more leeway.

  • We have had both LR D and LR E ST tires in the size above and didn't notice any difference in reliability or longevity. We have had similar success with either load rating getting 4 years of use before replacing them. My take is brand and tire care are more pertinent in terms of an ST tire's ability to deliver reliable service, we find that 4 years is the cut-off for us and always replace all four tires without question. Thankfully we have never had any blowouts while underway and we do tend to go beyond 65mph from time to time.
  • I had cheap China C rated tires for 4 years on my 19ft trailer that came from the dealer and had no issues. A few days ago I just bought D rated Maxxis. We have a long trip this summer so we will see if they hold up.
  • I've had for the most part good service from my 225 D ST tires. My 1st set were U.S made and except for a bent Lippert axle they never game me any issues. 2.5 years and approximately 10,000 miles.
2nd and current set are China made. I had one tire develop a hump on the top of the tread. I caught it in time and swapped it for the spare and continued on. That was last year and I'm still running the rest of the tires. 3 years and approximately 9-10,000 miles. I plan on running them for this summer as we don't have as many trips planned this summer, so I probably won't put much more than another 1000 miles on them.
At that point I think I'll replace them with the new Carlisle HD tire. Not so much because I don't have faith in the 225 ST Marathons but because the new Carlisle just looks like a better tire.
FWIW I'm way under on the combined tire load ratings and also keep my speeds under 65mph.
P.S, both tires were GY Marathons.
