We Jeeped that area about 8 years ago so I cant remember every thing about it but I do remember taking a trail from Crested Butte to Taylor Park. We came out onto 742 and went right heading south to the north end of Taylor reservoir. Part of the trail took us in the river at times. I will ask my son if he remembers the name of the trail and send you a message. Don't forget Tincap and St Elmo.
