MY 5er has a GVRW of 10,800. I now have the OEM Akuret 235/80/16. Max load range is 3417. Maaxis of the same size is 3420. Discount tire recommends an LT and I am aware of the debates. The tire they recommend is the Michlien LTX M/S2 245/75/16. Same Diameter. Load Range 3042. This is not about LT v/s ST., but, is this recommended tire, sufficient for my application.?3042 per tire gives a hypothetical GVRW of over 12,000 lbs. If this is not applicable, I will go with the Maaxis. Thanks

Don't forget about 20% of the weight is on the pin leaving about 2,700 lbs on the tires. :)

In practice, however, LT tires are just more rugged and better able to withstand the stress of heavy towing. Also, too many people ignore (or are ignorant of) the fact that ST tires are only speed rated for 65 mph*. As for recommendations:If you are on a budget, buy a name brand ST tire and DO NOT EXCEED 65 mph.If you can afford them, get LT tires and drive them as you wish.* Please don't come back at me with a misquote from Goodyear PSB #2014-01 about running Marathon ST tires over 65 mph. I am looking at it right now. It does NOT say the tires are rated for running at 66-75 mph.

First time I've heard of a big retailer recommending a tire with lower load bearing capacity than OEM's...but if that's what your local Discount Tire says and they're willing to stand behind it, sounds like you're golden.

If you know the capacity of the tire is going to be enough to carry the load then I would not hesitate to use them.

I normally try to stay around the 65 mph limit on the tires, but here in Texas even some of our 2 lane state hwys are 75 mph. Therefore just to contend with traffic sometime requires a speed greater than 65. Just a guest is that your trailer with a GVRW of 10,800 has 6,000 lb. axles on it and the OEM Akuret 235/80/16 was maybe(?) a factory upgrade.
I think any quality LT tire load range E (3042# or more), Michlien & BF Goodrich are the ones talked about here the most would be a good tire for your trailer. MHO

I would guess they are 5200# rated axles...they are usually less than the GVWR because they know pin weight is involved.
I run the Maaxis tires and have had no issues but I also run 65mph or less...retired now so not in a hurry to get anywhere!

It has been shown repeatedly that the ST rating system over- rates to a 15 % factor to an LT tire .
As long as the LT tire at 2540 # rating exceeds the load carried you are good to go .
The LT tire at 2540 # rating is a much better tire than the 2830 # rated ST tire .
The ST 22570R15 load range E Chang-Shin of Taiwan Maxxis weighs about 30 # .
Every Goodyear store will mount the LT rated Cargo G26 on a trailer .
Francesca is squeamish because she does not know her subject .
She still believes an ST tire is a good tire .
That is wrong .
The LT tire is superior in every way .

It's also 10% less capable in load bearing capacity- 2540 as compared to 2830 for its (lower speed-rated) ST comparitor.

It's well known that speed is an important factor when determining load capacity; the difference between an LT and an ST tire load rating wise likely most often comes down to that fact. That being true, my opinion is that the above described tire can adequately substitute for an ST LRE of equivalent size PROVIDED the owner/operator commits to the lower speed limit of 65mph.

And also provided they can get a tire shop to install them on existing rigs. Most such shops are mighty squeamish about putting on replacement tires with lower load numbers stamped on them than the OEM tires they're replacing.

forget about the carcass, get off your carcass and get some G rated LT tires! OP, you already have 16 in rims, just make sure they can handle 110 PSI and bite the bullet.

Anything less is just settling and you'll regret it later.

I speak from personal (expensive) experience.
