I have them on my current trailer. Tapped the tail-light housings brake/turn wires with a suitcase connector and ran the wire along the top of the frame to the slide wiring elbow (both sides are mounted on fender skirts attached to slides) and to a point between the wheels.
It doesn't bother me a bit that they also come on with the brakes. As far as I am concerned there can't be too many lights anywhere on the rig. Front, back, sides! Lights or reflective safety tape; most people seem to be able to ignore them. I warn them twice and then if I really need to get over, I act on the "I'm bigger than they are" theory. (Probably also older and meaner, but that is another topic.)
