Truck Bed Tool Boxes and 5ers

I have a folding cover on my long bed. It actually could cause a problem in tight backing in spaces. I have about 6 inch clearance but backing uphill in a sharp turn I would have to watch it. My in bed combo aux fuel tank tool box works great as it is not over the rails. I personally would not put that type of tool box you are thinking of on your truck with a fiver. Unless you have a long bed and lots of clearance.

Worse than having a Short Bed!! You are best to keep it below the bed rails, the over the rails just chew up the rails. If you want a cap when not towing the 5er you can put one on or a bed cover.

30" deep front to back bed height. Very nice, NOT cheap. I was lucky I found this one on CL for $300.

This would be the way I would it if I had to deal with the 5th wheel...

You can add the FOLD-A-COVER brand folding hard panels to cover this whole thing when not using it... The panels will fold up on top of the tool box just behind the rear window. I current use this fold-a-cover setup and the panels will still fold up out of the way to gain access to a front mounted larger tool box like shown here...

Even with all of these tool boxes install you can still have a couple of 2KW Honda Generators sitting in the open areas on either side of the hitch or use a less height tool box just behind the tailgate....

On both of my trucks that I have used to tow the 5th wheel, I had running boards that allowed me to step up and reach into the tool boxes in each truck. The tool boxes are the type that sit inside the bed rails at the front of the pickup bed and are flush with the top of the rails. In my old truck the lid of the box was 2 inches above the bed rails. It never came in contact with the 5th wheel even in tight off camber turns.

Yes, this is what we have, flush with the top of the bed. The picture shows the box, got at Loews or HD, can't remember for sure.
