I tow our present 36' 13.5K lb. fiver with an '06 Dodge 3500 SRW, LB, CC, Cummins with goodies, 4wd, 6sp man., EB, S.B.D.D. clutch and like others I have added airbags to the rear. I went with the Pac Brake ones that have in cab control with gauges for each bag (they are on separate circuits/lines) as well as for air tank psi.
The difference when towing this same trailer before the bags and after is truly amazing. It's like the exhaust brake (also Pac Brake) I don't know how I did it without. I suggest for the safety and for the quality of your time towing that you do both mods. It makes the drive while towing a trailer so much better, you don't feel as warn out after you get to where you're going.
For my truck I am going to get new rear suspension. I have looked at all the options, from Carli, Deaver, or Kore, or whoever with bags to keep it smooth when empty, to the Sulastic Springs, the Firestone kit, to total four link. The problem with those Sulastic Springs, is they just are different spring hangers that replace your shackle and have a rubber isolator, and are big $$$$$ for what you get. You can get aftermarket springs for the same cost. I thought about going with the Kelderman system, both the total four link setup, and their spring mount leveler setup, again very pricy but you get good stuff. The trick for me is no lift, or not more than about 2". I like my trailers to ride flat, the way they are supposed to, and every lifted rig I see towing a trailer at some crazy angle just makes me cringe.
There are a couple other ways, making your own system is one, and I may still. I'd really like some four link with coil-overs and extended bags!! Overall, the best system I have come across is by Auto Flex.
Auto Flex makes a simple bolt on, in your driveway type, simple, weekend project setup that just plain works, and well. It is also very reasonably priced. I hate to use the word cheap, cause it isn't in any way, but it is very inexpensive for what you get. The best part is they also make air suspensions for trailers. In fact they're the ones who supply PJ with the kits if you spec air ride on your cargo trailer.
They have the perfect setup for all of the big three truck brands. It replaces your leaves and is a very nicely engineered deal, total air ride for your truck, with all the parts you need included for $3440. That's with the compressor, control and gauge, 5 gal. tank, shocks, all of it to convert your truck. No, I do not work there, nor am I affiliated with them in any way. I am simply sharing what I think is the best solution to most of our trucks rear suspension issues. It is the system I plan on installing on my truck AND my trailer. The new trailer is a triple axle beast, and this kit will help it ride smooth. The one I have now (and is for sale) has independent torsion axles, very nice setup, and tows beautifully. Hope to make the Voltage do the same.
Auto Flex Hope this helps someone. Mike B.
Had to add, RickSo, your setup is stunning! Love the colors and the tow rig, very nice!!
