Unhitching SuperGlide hitch with truck at an angle

How straight in line does the tow vehicle have to be when un-hitching a SuperGlide hitch. Son in law has a new 5er with the SuperGlide and it seems like if the truck is at an angle after backing in, he has trouble getting the pin out of the jaws. Any tips, or how many degrees is acceptible?

  • I unhooked a few time at large angles. Pull the latch and lift the pin straight up off the fifth wheel with the landing gear.

Not easy to hitch up that way, usually I could reposition the truck and back straight in later.
  • We have the superglide and always straighten the truck before unhitching. Putting it in park, or giving it a bump in reverse, after chocking the trailer, always releases the pressure and allows the release handle to easily come out.
  • On my Superglide.....I always unhook no more then 10 degrees off center.....and that is what Pullite says to unhook or hook up.
  • I don't have a SuperGlide but what I do is after I chock the tires,I put my truck in neutral and take my foot off the brake. It takes the pressure off the hitch jaws and then I put it back in park, set the brake and go out and pull the handle. Releasing the tension really helps. Maybe it will help the SIL also.
