Wet bolts

The bushing that goes around the outside of the bolt and into the ends of the springs. Are they tight that they need to be press fitted into them? The spring ends not the bolts.

Thanks
  • I used a large 'C' Clamp and pressed them into my spring eyes.

Didn't want to chance any distortion/nicks by whacking them with a hammer.

They slipped right in using the 'C' Clamp

The bolts have to be pressed in due to the serrated section on bolts that cut groves into shackle holes so they don't spin. Grease holes need to be properly aligned horizontally and not move when pressing the bolts in.

One of the better mods I did........
  • Be sure to put a bolt in the bushing when you press them in to help keep from collapsing the bushing. I kept a reamer on hand and had to use it on a couple to keep the bolt from being too tight when the bushings crushed slightly due to a tight fit. Too tight and you may not be able to grease the bushing properly.

10/4 on using a bolt & clamp... used a old bolt, just ground the seratrations off so it wouldn't damange the bushing... keep the grease hole horizontal to help the grease get distrubited.
  • Snug fit may take a few hits if on the tight side but not a huge effort. Bronze is softer than steel so use a wood block if you are going to hit it.

The bolt will be a bit more effort to press the splines into the hanger. C-clamp worked fine for me.
  • Thanks You people had confirmed that I will need to do some suspension work in the spring (once this snow melts and I can get it out of storage)

    So the story is
I am assuming I have a Lippert suspension under my trailer. I went to the local trailer/RV place and was looking for greaseable parts in the blushings. Got sold by the mechanic Dexter wet bolt system. He said doesn't matter if it is Lippert OR Dexter. They didn't install it (if you didn't buy it there they give you the cold shoulder on servce) Took it to a suspension, alignment, tire and brake place. When the guy took it apart the plastic blushings were worn out of shape. The blushings from the wet bolt kit slipped right in. They didn't need to be pressed in. I told him to change them anyway. His advice was (I was heading to West Virginia) to grease it before I left Grease it down there and grease it again when I go home.
Next problem with the suspension I have noticed for a while that the right side sits lower than the left. As I was putting it away last fall I noticed that one of the stacks of the leafs is not straight on the right side. That was new. So I am planning to replace all four springs.

So it looks like I might have to buy four new springs and a new wet bolt kit that fits and have it installed. So will it be Dexter OR Lippert?

    Thoughts?
