I took a 5k mile trip with me the wife and my two youngest (the twins) in our truck and 5th wheel combo. I can only say that was a very loooonnnnnggg trip. I would have rather made it in the Class c we had taken many long trips in previously. That is close quarters. Now we raised six wonderful charming kids. But that is still close on long trips. No problem at all on just a day there and a week at the beach and a day back though. It is very nice to have passengers way back especially at certain ages for instance on a 10 day road trip. A used class C can be purchased very resonalbe and is no problem taking it without a tow vehicle. In fact I thought it was great. JMHO
Just a point of reference for our family - the kids are used to 3-4 day road trips. We have done them consistently since they were 2 years old. In the last 2 weeks we have driven I5 from Washington to 101 through Los Angeles to I-15 all the way up to Salt Lake City. The kids are fine, no complaining, no issues.
The biggest advantage I see to a class a/c is the ability to use the bathroom and make lunch/dinner while driving.
With a fifth wheel - I pull over to the side of the road for a kid to use the restroom, do I have to pop out everything on the inside, and start up all of the systems for it to work? i assume that with everything closed up, there is no way to get to the bathroom?
