Wildcat Frame Issues

After reviewing input from this forum I have a good idea what my truck will tow, that being said I am currently looking at a slightly used 2006 Wildcat 32QBBS. The floor plan will fit our needs very well, however upon researching the unit I am finding some of these units are experiencing frame issues in the front. Question; can the frame be inspected without opening the front of the camper, where are the cracks located and if there are cracks what is involved with repairs. Most of the work on any of my campers I do myself but welding is not in my realm. We do not plan on living in this but we also don't plan on parking it in one place and safety is of upmost importance. Thank you for any input.
  • Lippert frame flex issues seem to generally be located in the pin box area. And no, there is no way to inspect it without opening up the nose.
  • You can look for clues such as caulking and trim coming loose on the outside edges where the overhang and the side walls meet. My Heartland Sundance had to go back to the factory for frame flex at the pin box and that was the first signs I noticed. Also look closely at the pin box area for any markings from trim sliding up and down rubbing the box.

I would be suspicious if it had new caulk in those areas only.

It's a shame that these rigs are built so shabby these days that you have to watch for so many defects.
  • Does the 5th wheel show signs of a cracked frame? If not then being an 06 it's probably not going to. I would think it would've shown up by now if it was bad.
  • Another thing you can do is add a air pin box. This helps minimize road shock on the frame and gives you a better ride as well.
  • Besides the telltale signs mentioned, you can measure the amount of flex. If the unit is at a dealer lot, most use a forklift to move units around. They can lift the unit at the pin, lower it til the landing gear just touches the ground, measure the height at the pin, then lower the unit fully and re measure. Anything over 1/2 inch is suspect. Much more difficult w/o a forklift but still possible.
  • Lippert has a pdf showing how to measure for flex and what is in spec. Search for lippert upper deck flex measurement instructions.
