Almost Ready

Hello Folks, We need some advice, We are getting our house ready to sell and go RVing full time. Several years ago we towed a 5th wheel with a one ton Dodge dually and it was ok however this time we will be retired and wish to try a different rig. We are interested in a 29ft. travel trailer and a Dodge 3/4 ton-4x4 diesel tow vehicle. Right now we are excited and nervous at the same time. We plan to see some sights and than move with the seasons. We have lots of questions! If this is not the right place to post this message please forgive me and direct me to the correct area. Thank you!

  • Thanks for all the replies, you all have really helped us. There is a campground not to far from us that we have visited and have spoke to some fulltimers. We are amazed at the excitement they have for the Rving life! By researching publications and using the internet we are slowly getting it all together to begin our new RV life. Thanks to all!
  • We are in the same position and hope to hit the road in January. We also decided on a truck/tt combo. Our 277RLS is 32' long - a little longer than we wanted but everything else fulfilled our want list. We have a cap on our F250 diesel giving us more storage room if we need it.

There are days when we are overly excited and days where we are terrified. I don't think that will change. I think the hardest part is going through stuff - so much stuff - to throw and give away. There is just so much...

This is a great place to learn everything you might want to know and a few things you didn't. Blogs are also a great tool. Good luck and I hope your plans/dreams come true!
  • I tried every length of trl , fiver and moho made. I LOVED my Jayco 29rk with one slide. BUT, it sure got small after a month or two, so I got us a 40 fter with r slides and loved it .

I advise you get a 4 slide 40fter and a good dually. But, I don't know your situation.
  • We just recently decided to stay with our TT rather than go with a 5th wheel. We did get a RAM 1 ton dually (traded a Dodge 3/4 ton gas). We decided the difference in price (between our TT & a 5th wheel) was too great & the difference in amenities too small to be worthwhile. However, we are very happy with the diesel truck. We don't have to be too concerned about what we carry or any mountain highways we want to climb. The 3/4 ton was adequate, but just, for some of the roads we've been on. I particularly wanted the heavy duty brakes & jake break. It's one thing to just barely make it up a mountain, but I sure didn't want to get pushed down the other side or have the brakes over heat! We're also adding a camper shell on the truck bed for that all important storage that TTs are short on. Anyway, whatever you decide...have a great time!
  • You will be very pleased towing a TT with a 3/4 ton. I had a 29 ft trailer and towed it with a 1/2 ton which was rated for it. I changed to a 3/4 ton and it was sooooo much better. No more downshifting at the drop of a hat, the wind and tractor trailers did not bother it as much and braking and curves where better in the 3/4 ton. My neighbor just traded his 5th wheel for a 29 ft trailer so he went and traded his 3/4 ton in on a new Dodge 1500. Now he says he wish he had kept his 3/4 ton. Plus what happens if you decide down the road the TT is not big enough and you want to go back to a 5th wheel.
  • I have friends who, after retirement, f/ted in a TT and truck w/truck cap for extra storage. After several years of traversing the country, they bought a cabin in the N.W. from which they continue their part time travels. Good luck and enjoy.
  • By your post I assume your not interested in another dually right now? OK then at least get a 3500SRW truck. The cost difference is very little, but you do gain in weight capacity. Going full time I suspect you will quickly discover the trailer your interested in is simply too small and will end up upgrading to larger. So why limit yourself by the truck you buy today. Full timers soon find places others did not know even existed to put stuff so weight is always a critical part of your traveling equasion.
  • You'll probably be OK but the important numbers when asking about towing are weights, not lengths.
