Alternative spots in CO

Hello all! We appreciate any feedback!

We are in the process of transitioning into full time RV living. Our goal is to save money, but to also experience the benefits of simple living.

We are looking for relatively cheap campgrounds in Colorado. We are also curious about if there are alternative places other than campgrounds to stay, such as renting out a lot?

Thanks guys!

  • I was in the Denver area last November and burned 30 pounds of propane on several nights and went 2 or 3 days on a tank the rest of the time. $26.00 for 30 pound refill. Plus an electric heater running most nights and a second electric heater under the holding tanks. You may not save as much as planned. You also have to be ready to abandon ship VERY quickly. If furnace problems develop you need to be ready to dump the water and winterize the system. Without the furnace blowing warm air into the holding tank area often times the tanks will freeze solid and cause great damage. RV's are designed to follow the nice weather.
  • We have found between 5-10 campgrounds that are open year round. The further south you go the easier it seems to be for obvious reasons. From what I have researched online it seems people use TT's quite often for winter RVing. I will look into some different types as an alternative. We were thinking Denver area or maybe Colorado Springs.
  • Where will you live in the winter? TT probably not a good idea for cold winter weather unless made specifically for that purpose. Most place such as campgrounds close in the winter in the northern states.
  • We are 26. I am a therapist in IL and my boyfriend works in IT. We have been talking about doing this for sometime and have really dedicated to this decision. We want to do this very bad and are really looking forward to the challenges and the experience in general. We are planning on living in our RV for a min of 6 months and most likely moving into a house within a year. The other positive note on living in an RV full time other than the experience is the money we will save. This is the reason for the original post. We want to find the best place for our money and are looking at all options.

The more info you give us the better answers you'll get. I'll add to the above... how old are you or are you over 62.
    * Never RVed and going FT brings to mind: Twice the husband on 1/2 the money, and in 1/10th the space. Boondocking will save you the most money so you want a RV with BIG tanks.
  • Thats where we want to live! I have been looking into various year round campgrounds in CO and I was just curious if that is really our only option. As far as boondocking goes we would prefer not to because this is our first expereince with an RV and long term camping so I think it would be best to have an electricity hookup along with other close by amenities if needed. We are currently in the market for an RV and are looking for a mid range travel trailor.
  • What type of RV do you have & are you intending on Boondocking ?
  • Just returned from a two-week stay in Denver area. We camped at Bear Creek Lake Regional Park, which happens to be near relatives but is also very accessible to most Denver spots. Cost was about $20/day for site with electric only. Cherry Creek Reservoir Park is similar in services and pricing.

You should be searching in general for info about camping in the Western United States. We are very partial to US National Forest campgrounds but they are for most part primitive - no electric, pit toilets, water at a central point. Most of the state or federal campgrounds will have a two-week limit for a single stay.

I have never tried to rent a spot on private property. Certainly it can be done in the west but you will need at least water and way to dump tanks to be in one place long. Try a search of the very long archives at this website and I'm sure something will turn up that you can use for a start on your new experience.
