Is it true that National Parks always allow some areas of free camping and that State Parks never ever allow it?
National parks typically don't allow free camping just anywhere. Even the remote hiker/tenter's campsites have a fee. Don't try to park in their parking lots. You'll get fined.
If they do allow vehicle camping in remote areas, such as in Death Valley, it's wise to check if you need a permit or just to check in and tell them where you're planning to be. Death Valley is no place to go off by yourself without someone knowing where you are.
