- Larryzv7ExplorerAren’t the winters brutal in South Dakota? I used to date a girl in Vermillion, went up there from Colorado a few times during the summer months; It was a small sleepy town back then but I’m sure a lot have since changed.

You didn't do a very thorough study of SD; you never have to step foot in the state to reg your vehicles or renew their reg.
One phone call to the court clerk to inform her you're a fulltime traveler gets you excused from jury duty.
you do have to return once every 5 yrs for DL renewal, but if your birthday falls in winter months you can renew up to 6 months before, or by filing a request, you can delay your expiration date by 6 months. - jrpExplorer

May want to rethink that 3% sales tax. Just viewed and article that showed it being 4%
That article and the 4% it refers to is the general state sales tax, which is not what applies to vehicles/RV's. The vehicle/RV tax is an excise tax at a fixed 3% as quoted above. Also, if you import your vehicle/RV from a different state where you already paid a sales tax on the vehicle purchase, you get credit (provided you saved the documentation), up to the 3% charged by SD. - parkmanaaExplorerDidn't read all the biased comments, but did not find one that mentions the difference in weather. Freeze your b u t t off in SD, but not in most of Texas.
But that's OK, we have plenty of good folks in TX, just head on North. - Old-BiscuitExplorer III

We chose Florida for several reasons, but I did hear some issues with SD if you need to get Obamacare. It seems there are only a few choices at the SD exchange, and one of which wants 6-9 months of utility receipts to prove you are a real SD resident. Not too easy to do if you are fulltimer. One company offers health insurance for the state only. Also not too good if you want to leave the state.

Howard of the RV-Dreams blog did a good post about SD and the Obamacare issues. If you don't need it, you would be okay. He also has some good information about choosing your state of residence.
FL doesn't participate in any multi-state plans under Obamacare at this time either

Also, I don't think SD taxes any SS or Pension as well as IRA's or any other retirement income. - Scott16ExplorerAnd Wyoming no State Income tax, 5% sales tax, but have stay in the state for 6 months a year to remaine a resident. Also no licence registration for Fifth Wheels or Truck campers. Your auto registration pays for your truck to haul/tow, and is higher cost than SD or Texas. Have to pay RV Registration if you have a Class A Moble home.
So Wyoming is not considered a Full-time RV friendly state, like SD or Texas. But i like the area, lots of out door camping available during the summer months through September, as many probably already know.
Scott - jnharleyExplorerI think the biggest issue for SD residency are for those who need to purchase individual health care plans. If you do not require that then SD residency will work well for you. Just use one of the mail forwarding services. We use MyDakotaAddress and are well pleased with the service we receive. The only thing that cannot be taken care of by the mail forwarding service is drivers license. Everything else such as vehicle registration can be handled for a fee of course. Even though SD went to a one time renewal by Internet, fulltimers RVers cannot use that option because of the paperwork requirements that must be provided. Jury duty is also not an issue. When spouse received his summons, he just sent a letter stating he was out of state traveling and was excused.

Texas does not have a state income tax.
I always laugh when I hear people getting all worked up about the safety inspections in Texas, which only need to be done when you are in the state. We know people who go 5-6 years without going into the state and just have the inspection done when they do re-enter. The inspection takes all of 10 minutes, costs $14.50, and they check lights, horns, brakes, etc., no emission testing unless you live in one of the big cities - and those who use Escapees don't live in a big city.
As to having to take a driver's test if you have a rig weighing over 26,000# - if you can't pass that simple 30 minute driving test you have no business out on the road.
