AAA ERS FAIL

Last week I experienced an instant flat (near blowout) on Hwy 445 on the Pyramid Lake Highway on the reservation after running over small amounts of animal bones just northwest of Pelican Point and Windless Bay beach.

Called AAA and they said no problem and confirmed my exact location on the Indian reservation and said less than 1 hour arrival time of Tow truck. After 1 hour I called them again and second operator said my service request had been cleared (stopped) but they would again contact a tow outfit and expediate my request and again they confirmed my location on the reservation.

After another hour I checked voice mail and the 3rd call center operator said they did not have a permit to go on the reservation.

I hung up and called local Indian tow operator (2 brothers) who live in Wadsworth on I-80 and other one Toby who lives in nearby Sutcliff village. In less than 30 minutes Toby arrived and together we placed a temporary spare on the rear wheel of my heavily loaded Dodge Ram 1500.

On my way back to Reno I pass a AAA tow truck heading towards Pyramid Lake and my voice mail (4th operator) later says the truck is near my flat destination on the lake. This is at least 4 hours after 1st service call and 3 hours in high heat of noon day sun with no shade.

Many many thousands of RVs and cars/trucks visit Pyramid Lake every year. I need another much more reliable ERS service. Maybe USAA?? or anyone else.
  • The day before our 19 year old daughter went off to college, we signed on to AAA. The next day, Monday, she headed off to school. At her half way point...2 hours from school, 2 hours from home, she broke down. AAA refused to help because of their policy of not acting until the third day of the policy...or something like that. They left a 19 year old young woman stranded. I have three more stories...shall I go on?
  • I had the exact same problem with AAA. I was in northern Nevada on I80 when a tire blew a hole in the wheel well of my travel trailer. Triple A was NO help. Been paying for their road service for all my vehicles and the trailer for years and they totally failed me. While I surveyed the damage my wife spent an hour getting jerked around by what seemed like incompetent AAA employees. I began to jack up the trailer while truckers were whizzing by just a few feet from the side of my trailer. Had a devil of a time as the steel belts were wrapped tightly around the axle. Cut my arms up pretty good before I was able to get the spare on. Definitely not a happy camper when it comes to AAA.

It seems to be *really* hit or miss. In low call volume times service seems to be acceptable.

I had need of their service 3 times, first was a lock-out (the dog stepped on the lock button on the door), the second was for a flat in a park (picked up a nail somewhere, but it only went flat overnight) and once for a transmission problem on the side of the road.

The last one was the issue, it was on the side of an Interstate, in a blizzard, on President’s Day. After way too many phone calls sitting there freezing (couldn’t run the engine and out of propane) for 4 hours a sympathetic tow operator stopped by to check on us. He made no bones about saying that GS had called them numerous times but they were under orders NOT to take the job because GS paid a LOT less than the regular customers would pay. It was only after they were mostly caught up that he took the time to service us.

    Never again!!
  • Ever think about the logic of roadside service plan? The company is betting you will take care of your vehicle, not break down, need service. If they loose that bet too often, you get cancelled
Plus the company pays a cut rate to the provider when you need service. (When I had tow truck, if I took a cripple-A call I knew I would be paid 1/3 to 1/5 what a cash customer would pay) Now who do you think is likely to get fastest service?
IMHO, the only advantage to most of the "services" is when you need help, you have a phone number to call. Might be better if that number got you service, but at least you have the number.
Only time I needed a tow for pickup and camper, used smartphone to find tow services. Did not know area well enough to decide which would be best. Found a non-emergency number for state Highway Patrol. Called them told it was not emergency, gave my location, and asked for a recommendation. The tow cost less cash than a year premiums.
  • Reminds me of the time my older brother and I broke a u-joint out that way, no cell phones at the time. We ended up using a leather belt and baling wire to limp out of there. Lived in Lake Tahoe and tramped around that area a lot.
  • The roadside assistance companies are like cell phone coverage, some companies are better than others in specific areas.
I have State Farm roadside on my truck, but have Coachnet on my camper. We’ve used the services twice, and onetime State Farm couldn’t find anyone in the area, the other time Coachnet couldn’t. Both times we gave the name of the towing company to the operator that couldn’t find anyone, and they called them and worked things out. We ended up paying for the tow and got reimbursed one of the times.
As big as this country is, there will be holes where they can’t find anyone.
