Not a GS rah rah person here but being a full timer I travel a lot and there just are some areas that do NOT have tow companies ON CONTRACT WITH GS in the area you breakdown in and/or with the proper equipment.
That said you did find out that AAA did have one 'on contract' to them that they could send out to you.
I always have at least 2 ERS memberships when I RV.
One is GS and the other AAA for just that type of situation you experienced.
Different ERS memberships = different list of contractors for each one.
I figure if one doesn't have one in the area the other one will. My vehicle insurance towing policy being the third backup.
It's all about who they are contracting with folks. Not what tow service is near you or has the correct equipment when you breakdown.
You could be broken down on the side of the road looking right at a tow truck company across the street, and if they are not on 'contract' with GS they will NOT be coming to help you any time soon!:W
