Charter Membership Recognition

Marcus,
Good Sam has been around a long time and 'back in the day' we used to all be proud to post our member number on the front of our unit just below the GS emblem. I can't remember the exact year (1964 or 1965?), I bought my first little 15 ft Red Dale trailer, subscribed to Trailer Life and joined something that sounded like a good idea - Good Sam Club. Little did I know until I received my membership documents that I was a Charter Member and assigned number 0052 as my membership number. I guess with only 4 digits, they did not expect much growth but, as I recall, only the first 1000 were to be on the charter so that may explain the four digit number better.
It would be nice if some day, we could retrieve those charter membership rolls and list the folks who were the original 1000 members. I have been in and out of the club several times since then and know that it would not be feasible to list the member number below the decal any longer but perhaps a little extra Charter Member sticker to go next to the GS sticker would be nice. Any other charter members still around?

Thank you all for your time and post. And most of all thank you for your membership. I will make sure your ideas and suggestions are reviewed for any possible changes in the future. Have a great week and travel safe.

  • So true. The original intent as I can recall it was to be a Good Samaritan to other RVers who may be in need on the road. There was also the social aspect of it - to organize gatherings of like minded folks whose common enjoyment was traveling and camping. Breakdowns were pretty common and to have another RVer stop to help was nice. Club or not, I hope that attitude still exists but the main word today is - MONEY - and how it can be made by selling the things that RV folks need - accessories, vehicles, insurance, etc. I am not sure exactly who owns GS now (Affinity or Camping World) but they still do perform a service and I appreciate some of the efforts of Marcus to improve the service to the RV owner. I forget the name of the person at Trailer Life who started this organization but it was a wonderful thing at the time and has grown tremendously, both in numbers and in commercial appeal. Still would like to see a little bit of recognition for the charter members who were the initial developers of Good Sam.

  • Great idea, charter members should be recognized in some way.

One benefit would be free membership after XX number of years. One motorcycle organization I belong to gave me a free Charter Life membership after 25 years of paying dues.

I am a Charter Member. I don't really see many benefits tho

I don't think the OP is asking for more benefits, but the recognition. Other clubs actually have nice placards they they attach to their motorhomes, signifying their membership and a number on it. I think GS has gotten away from really having a membership number, but more of an account number.

It's sad to see that the "club" has turned more into a "how can it save me money" organization from what used to be more like a true club. As so I've heard.
