I have been using the Route Planner for several years now and for the most part (97 % I'd say) it is very helpful. I've used it to travel the east coast and across the country. Yes it does find many attractions along your route, though it is good to use other sources that along with the planner. As with any GPS unit you need to be aware that sometimes it will route you on roads you may not want to travel.
An example would be on my our trip across the U.S. we need to get of the highway for a needed pit stop. When we returned to our trip the GPS found a shorter (by miles) route which routed us up a winding, mountain road. I ended driving 10-15 miles before I found a place to turn around.
Another issue is when you drag a route (creating a waypoint) on the planner so you can take a preferred highway then transfer it to your GPS it directs you to exit the highway at each waypoint and then back on. You have to remember to "Skip" the next portion of the route before it sends you off an exit.
Another issue we had was on Route 287 south in New Jersey. A route we use to avoid New York city and G.W. bridge when traveling to New England. I wanted to get to the NJ Turnpike via the highway, instead our Good Sam Gps trip planner routed us off R2987 and through a city residential area with hills, turns, and traffic lights. It cost us about one hour to get back to the highway.
So I wouldn't rate the trip planner "AWESOME", just one tool I use when traveling, with the understanding of the glitches in the routing.
