Extended Warranty on AC unit

I recently took my Keystone Montana 3121 into Campers World to have the AC unit in the bedroom replaced. It was blowing air just not cold. It was diagnosed as defective. The technician found a replacement unit and said they could order and replace it under warranty. The bad news was that the existing thermostat does not work with the new unit. Because the existing thermostat is not defective the warranty will not cover the new thermostat that will control the new AC unit. The extended warranty is thru Assurant. I called and talked to customer service. They sent me an email address for the appeals department. How can you cover selected parts of a system and not cover other parts that are required to make the system work. Sounds like a scam to me. Any one have any luck with this type of issue?

  • Just an update on this ordeal. I did send an appeal to Assurant claims department and it was denied. There is an obsolete, discontinued, or unavailable parts clause that allows them to deny claims. After going thru this, I would never pay for any extended warranty again. What a ripoff!

how much did you pay for the warenty, and how much would the actual ac replcment have cost you if you paid out of pocket for it and it wasn't covered?

Sorry but this is pretty consistent with what folks usually report on extended warranties. Most people just put the money they would have spent on an extended warranty in the bank and cover repairs as necessary. Extended warranty companies and the dealerships that sell them make a lot of money on them. So the gamble wins for the warranty company, not the consumer. There are usually so many clauses about what they don't cover than what they do. But hey, at least they covered the AC unit. not sure what you paid for the warranty but maybe you got close to breaking even.

  • thats kinda of a rip off to me, I am not sure how it works there, but if the unit needs a special thermostat to work it should have been included..  to me it isn't "fixed" untill it is working.

how old is your camper that they can't order the same unit that you had?

So you have what is likely an expensive aftermarket insurance policy (they call it warranty but there are differences).
Regardless, you were successful in getting some of your extended policy premium back without much hassle and a very expensive component replaced.
idk the fine print of your policy but betting you did well to get what’s covered actually covered without much hassle and the policy doesn’t cover other components like a thermostat.

  • Happens all the time. You just have to pay a few bucks for the new thermostat. Not a big deal

You can only replace it with a $180 thermostat?  Seems somewhat unlikely or is that what the repair shop is charging and do you know its required?
