G S Roadside A

The DW and I were all set to leave Yuma after 6 months jumped in the P/Up and the battery was dead. Dang. The wife called Good Sam and the Lady Dispatcher asked for membership #, year of P/Up, color, make, model, F150 or F250, what eng, at or stick, camper on bed, serial # or vin #, etc etc. Then she said we could only have a jump for a dead battery but cannot tow if you choose to have a jump, our choice. After 15 min talking to the Lady the neighbor loaned me a small 4"x 5" jumper that he used to start his DP.
It worked like a champ. My wife was still talking to the G S Dispatcher
who had never called to have someone show up. I never had this problem

  • I had jumper cables but my P/Up was 20 ft under metal awning and my jumpers was 20 ft long. Too short to hook up to another vehicle. I did ask neighbors if they had a extra battery. He had a 100 amp charger but that would not start my P/Up.
This was at 6:30 in the AM, I do not know the name of the device that I used to start my P/UP since my neighbor is in Yuma and I am in Ca until Oct. I will be buying what ever the name of the device I used
  • After having a dead battery while camping, I got a portable jump starter from Amazon and take it in the RV.

Do you have the name/model of the jumper borrowed from your neighbor?
I guess the moral of the story is not to be so quick to call GSRA for help.

At our RV shows we have to use a jumper unit to power up the trailers to put out the slides and jacks. We have a couple of battery jumpers that work terrific with decent capacity; made by CAT. Also has an air compressor built in.
  • Maybe it's just me but I have found that now-a-days, people generally are reluctant to ask for help in such situtations - why is that?

I remember many times knocking on peoples doors asking for help (pre-cell phone area); I once ran out of gas and saw a house with the garaage door open - I popped my head in and asked if he had any gas - sure did and would not take a penny.

2 years ago I had a slow flat on my motorcycle, I saw someone with a classic car on the drive-way; I stopped ask if he had an air compressor - sure did.

Same thing happened about 5 years ago on another motorcycle trip.

I can probably think of 10 other situations like this. But now-a-days I find if people need help they usually stay in their cars and phone somebody.

I had a cyclist have a flat right outside my house. I saw him on the phone, then I went out and asked if he needed help - I have a patch kit and fixed his tire.

I might just be getting old. What's happened?
  • Lesson learned: Carry your own jumper cables and always ask a fellow RVer for help. Fellow RVers won't let you down.

    Edit:
True story. Several years ago the in-laws were camping with us. My father-in-law accidentally locked his keys in his car. They were getting ready to go somewhere and realized they were locked out. This was before the day of On-Star and such. And his car was older, so did not have all the electronics like todays autos have.

We started scrambling for a lock smith, checked with the campground host and had the ball, somewhat rolling for help.

Then my wife was talking to the camper directly across the road from us and turned out ... HE WAS A LOCKSMITH and had all his tools with him. In 10 seconds he had the car opened!

We were all simply amazed! Talk about excellent timing! We exchanged stories and made a new friend that day.

Always believe in your fellow campers. They have a wealth of experience!
