Good Sam Emergency Road Care Service - kick 'em to the curb

Our experience today with Good Sam Emergency Road Service. People are always asking which is best so I offer a real time experience today.

We were west bound on I-10 about 30 miles outside Tucson, AZ. We blew a tire on the front of the tow car, shredded. So we called Good Sam Emergency Road Service, this was at 12:47 PM. We are probably 6 miles from Benson, 30 miles or so from Tucson.

The rep said they would text us who was coming out...then we waited...half a hour later we got a call from a tow company located in Bisbee, AZ. We confirmed our location, he said I am not coming there to change a tire, that's 65 miles from here.

So I call Good Sam back again, explain what transpired. Several calls later and still no one assigned...by 2 PM we are DONE with Good Sam Emergency Road Service. Outside we go to change the dang tire (thankfully a trucker stopped and helped us). By 2:20 we are headed west once again.

The rep blows my cell phone up, wasting my minutes trying to justify her lack of service. I ask to speak to a supervisor, I am hot by now! I get a acting supervisor, she doesn't care. I told them to cancel and give me my money back for the year, they won't do that either. They don't care.

Folks, I know this is a flat tire. But my husband has Parkinsons Disease and if you know anything about that you understand that changing a tire is a big deal.

If Good Sam Road Care Service can't even get someone out to change a tire on my tow vehicle then they are certainly not capable of helping with our Class A RV.

  • GS should have told the first service where they were and what they needed. If that was done they would have known then that service would not go that far to change a tire and not waste everyones time. I was ready to buy the service until I kept reading how many times they dropped the ball and just went with my insurance carrier. They were cheaper also.
  • I called them last week with a question about my January, 2014 renewal. The guy would not listen and kept interrupting me so I could never finish a sentence. When I asked him to let me finish my question, he just kept reading his "script" louder.

He made my decision easy....I am switching to CoachNet.

I do know that with all the bad info I see posted about the GS road service recently I'm not sure I will renew with GS. It is road service. Changing a tire is road service. If GS can't handle it then they should get out of the road service business. Scamming customers in believing that emergency service is just around the corner when it isn't available is dishonest to say the least.

GS never said they wouldn't change the tire...the first guy that called wouldn't do it but they would have found somebody else...the OP had an arbitrary amount of time they were willing to wait and decided to do the job themselves.

  • Would love to hear what Good Sam has to say about these complaints and how they are handled.
  • In my limited experience with Good Sam and roadside assistance in general, an hour and 13 minutes is NOT that long to wait. Any roadside assistance service is nothing more than a network of independent service providers who put themselves on a list to take service calls coming in from the central dispatch that you call. Depending on where you are and what you need done, it can take a while for them to find someone that can help you. Just because you are only 6 miles from a town doesn't mean that they have service providers in that town that are signed on to participate.

I can tell you from my experience that Good Sam is as good as any other, they WILL help you but they won't guarantee how soon. I prefer Good Sam because they will take care of the trailer not just the truck.

Honestly I think some folks sign up for these services and think they have a driver sitting in a tow truck waiting for the phone to ring to assist a stranded motorist. Of course they want you to believe that when you sign up but that's just not the case....and not picking on Good Sam, any roadside assistance is like that. Sorry to hear about your difficulties, but if you need to call any roadside assistance service for anything, the best thing you can do for your own blood pressure is cancel whatever plans you had for the rest of the day.

  • Yes, Parkinsons and other conditions I can understand your plight. Glad to see you are still out and enjoying life. Some member here mentioned jackrabbitusa. Maybe having their number as a plan-B would help out for roadside service.
