Good Sam Roadside assistance -ultimately did the right thing
We had a blowout on I-95 about 10 minutes south of Portsmouth, NH. It was Friday around 9PM. BTW - tires were 3 years old, camper was not overloaded, and I monitor tire pressure with a TPMS - so this was not a maintenance issue. It was our second blowout - same side - bad Chinese Goodyear Marathons - earlier blowout same day same side - so no spare available.
Called 911, then Good Sam roadside assistance. Police helped us with flares and picking up debris. Good Sam tried but could not locate either a towing service or a tire, but kept trying for 4 hours, then gave up. Police suggested unhooking and going to a hotel for safety until the next morning. We did that. Kudos to the NH State police and DOT crew that helped with replacing the tire the next morning.
Sullivan's tire in Portsmouth had 4 new tires in stock, so we purchased one to replace the blow out one, then drove camper to their shop to have the other 3 replaced and the spare replaced with a remaining good tire. Kudos to Sullivan's Tire.
Even though we informed Red Apple Campground of our situation, after telling us to take our time and arrive when we could after hours, they gave our site away and kept our deposit even though we again called early that morning at the hotel. They were rude and arrogant - we were supposed to spend 4 nights there. Bad Apples for the owner of Red Apple Campground.
As for Good Sam - I know they were trying hard to help us - the people we spoke with were curtious. Sounds like their network of towing companies and tire companies is not very extensive. I ended up doing all of my own leg work and tire work. Not sure when they would have been able to get us help - Portsmouth, NH is a fairly populated area with lots of businesses. I am disappointed but will keep an open mind.
We returned home to MD - cancelled the rest of our trip due to Red/Bad Apple Campground.
