Good Sam's Scam(Watch your credit cards)

I recently decided to move my many years of membership from Good Sam’s to Coach net. For no good reason, just felt like a change was due. I did not renew my member ship for roadside assistance or my Good Sam’s membership. I was surprised to learn the credit card I used last time I renewed was billed. When I called, the agent said it was auto-billed. I never gave authorization for this to happen. Even though I just received the statement, he was eager to give me a partial refund. What a joke! No sour grapes on my end, but there is a problem the way you are doing business.
  • Hello All,

We offer Autorenewal, as it is an excellent service because it locks your rate at the lowest rate we offer at the time. You also avoid receiving advance notices and notices after you have already paid. You can always update your card information by calling us, and we test the card a few months ahead of time to diminish the chance of any problems, then remind you 30 days before we charge it.

When you make a payment by calling in we are required to ask if you want to be set up for Autorenewal. With out your express permission we can't set your account up that way. Also always remember that if you send in your renewal, to check as we offer the option to either opt in to Autorenewal or to opt out of it. Furthermore, you can always request to go back to paper statements. For more information please call us at 1-800-234-3450.

  • I saw a post where one of the CC companies offers a virtual card number that is good for one transaction. This sounds like a good way to stop this type of activity. Anyone have any info on how this works? OP thanks for heads up.
  • Did you call the credit card people to have a pay stop placed on the order? If yes, you woulde not have any charges. If no, you should.
  • Yeah, same thing happened to me.
It appears that if you used a credit card to pay for renewal, Good Sam automatically assumes they can charge every year thereafter.
I called Good Sam to get the charge reversed and was told that they could only refund by check in 6-8 weeks. That sure is not good customer service.

I immediately went to my credit card account and disputed the charge. My credit card reinstated the money and now Good Sam has to prove they actually have permission to take auto-pays from my credit account.

I wonder if it was in the fine print or terms and conditions you agreed to many years ago when you signed up

Initially that is what I thought. I was told by the Agent that when I renewed by phone previously the auto-renew was placed on the account automatically. I did not agree to this and that is why I created the post. This is the first time this has happened and I have renewed my memberships with them a number of times. And truthfully if I had not switched the Roadside Assistance, I could have missed it since it was not a lot of money.

If no sour grapes why did you call it a scam - sure - glad you will not on here anymore - now that you are not paying to maintain this site

I said nothing about not being on here anymore. I simply called attention to a very poor business practice. I called it a scam to alert those who may not be as diligent, due to the trust place in Good Sam's. I was under the impression that this site as most are maintained by advertising dollars. Guess you learn something new everyday. Thanks for your reply.
  • Not a scam at all. I have had my membership and roadside assistance on auto renew for several years. I get one membership reminder a year approximately one month before renewal time at which time I have the option of cancelling. I believe by using this option you get a guaranteed rate with no increase in fees. It may not be for everybody, but it works for me. It's possible that you may not remember, but sometime in the past you agreed to the auto renew option.
  • You probably got a reduced rate for the auto-renew. They do that promotion all the time.
  • If no sour grapes why did you call it a scam - sure - glad you will not on here anymore - now that you are not paying to maintain this site
  • I wonder if it was in the fine print or terms and conditions you agreed to many years ago when you signed up
