Hidden Charges on the Extended Service Plan

I cancelled my Extended Service Plan (ESP)yesterday because I was selling my TT and discovered that the insurer charges a $50 termination fee that was NEVER discussed or even mentioned in pre-sales discussions.

When I expressed some amazement at that, the agent handling the cancellation said, "That's the insurer's fault, not Good Sam."

But Good Sam is offering the product to us members so Good Sam has to accept the responsibility for illegal/unfair advertising when a vendor they sponsor shafts members, no?

While I feel very good about 99% of my interactions with Good Sam, this one leaves a pretty bad taste in my mouth. I'll have to be much more cautious of all Good Sam offerings in the future to insure that I don't get hammered by small print or non-print back-stabs.

Just a heads-up.

  • Okay, I must have missed the small print and I have no doubt that administrative work needs to be covered but I felt $50 was a bit much and it needed to be made much clearer for me to feel good about it.

However, I was contacted almost immediately by Good Sam informing me that they'd waived the termination fee for me since it was about three times my monthly premium so that level of response and customer service just completely wiped out any bad feelings I might have had about Good Sam.

As I mentioned in my first post, every other experience that I've had as a Good Sam member has been stellar so now, thanks to this rapid and fair reply, I can say I'm 100% satisfied with my experience with Good Sam. And that is heart-felt.

It's all in the terms and conditions contract. Rarely do people read the 'entire' contract before agreeing/signing. Contracts trump anything a salesperson says or doesn't say every time that's a given.
  • We reached out to billcard yesterday and promptly refunded the $50 cancellation fee.

Here is the paragraph on the front of the first page of the terms and conditions for the Good Sam Extended Service Plan:

"Cancellation: In the event of cancellation of this Coverage within 30 days of the purchase of the Coverage, We agree to refund the full purchase price to You, less any claims paid or approved. If this Coverage is canceled beyond 30 days from the date of purchase of the Coverage, We will calculate and make a pro rata refund based on time, less an administrative fee of $50.00. Requests for cancellations may be received by phone or in writing. We may cancel this Coverage for: 1) Non-payment of the premium or 2) Material or Verbal misrepresentation or fraud in obtaining this Coverage or in the submission of a claim."

The cancellation fee is to cover our costs of seeking a refund from our Insurer, our Claims Administrator and the tax authority for the premium we paid on behalf of the customer that cancelled. I don't believe that this is a "hidden charge", as it is clearly disclosed on our website, as another member pointed out, and in our terms and conditions.
  • Pretty up front on web page

Q: If I purchase Good Sam Extended Service Plan now and change my mind, can I get my money back?
Yes. If you cancel coverage within the first 30 days, we will refund you 100% of your paid premium, less any claims paid. If you cancel after 30 days, you get a pro-rated refund for all the months that are left, less a $50 Cancellation Fee. We will waive the Cancellation Fee if you use your refund to buy a new Good Sam Extended Service Plan policy for a new rig.

  • When I was selling P&C Ins. no one ever wanted to hang around and listen to me read the 15 page policy, but, when something was excluded on a claim, they all said "I was not told this was not covered". :S

Was it spelled out in the paperwork you received?
  • They have paperwork to do to cancel the policy so they want to be paid for it. I'm in the process of getting coverage from another company and they charge a $50 fee to cover their cancelation costs if I ever choose to do so.
