Just a Heads Up on Good Sam UPDATE

My first instance of using GSRA and I'm just ..... Venting because I DID get a free tow to a 'repair facility'.

Our RV broke down near Waelder Texas @ 8:00 last night. About 10:30 the agent, Tamera, finally called me back with the good news that she'd finally found a tow truck driver to come get us & a repair facility that could fix us up in Luling Texas, about 30 minutes away. She said she'd talked to someone @ GT Automotive and that, based on the information I'd provided of what the RV was doing, it was a fairly simple fix and would be about $$.

About 1:00 this morning we dropped off the RV at GK Automotive, which is a tin building with a hand painted sign on the front with the same phone number listed as GSRA had given me. Also stated was "Emergency Number 24/7" under that number.

The tow driver nicely dropped us off at a motel in town since we don't have a gennie. I had left the RV keys in GK Automotives mailbox with a note taped to their door.

About 7:30 this AM I was back up trying to get in touch with GK Automotive about fixing my RV. I tried about a dozen times between 7:30-9:00 without even getting an answer machine. So I called GSRA back to update them & the bottom line was they don't even know if this repair facility is open on Saturday or not!! All they are required to do is find a facility that verifies they can work on the RV & quotes me a price to fix it. And SINCE that is what transpired, they cannot/will not authorize another tow to a facility that can fix the RV today.

Luckily I have family that will drive the 2.5 hours to pick up me, my son, & our kitten so we are not stranded all weekend long.

So MAYBE GSRA might start asking when the repair MIGHT be done so that information could be passed along to the consumer so they could plan accordingly. Or at least the shop hours. What if they got a repair facility owner who stated that yes they could fix the RV BUT failed to mention they were going on vacation for the next week or so?

I, for one, would have liked to know last night that my RV wouldn't be repaired until Monday. My family would have come & gotten us last night & I wouldn't have had to spend the time/$$/effort to find a hotel to stay in for a night.

  • Sorry to hear about the breakdown and disruption of your vacation plans. I appreciate reading about it and the responses since it clarifies for me just what to expect when you have GSRA.

Of course our first concern is safety. After that it's convenience. My expectation at this point is that roadside assistance will get my vehicle off the road to a place that can do the required repair. How much time it takes to accomplish either will depend on the particular situation (place, time, repair required).

I would be interested in what criteria GS uses to designate a facility as a "professional service center capable and willing to repair your vehicle".

Perhaps the option to pay more for weekend service?

And keep in mind that most shops operate Monday thru Saturdays 8am- 5pm and Saturdays 8am to noon and do deserve time off. I know when traveling s*** happens but it's not the garages fault they happen to be closed when you break down. I don't know of any mechanics in my area that are open past noon on Saturdays and neither on Sunday. Yes I have been traveling and had breakdowns and had to wait til Monday for a garage to open. It sucks but what else can you do but wait.
  • Unfortunately, if the program didn't have rules that they follow and allowed people to twist it to fit what they need and want it would probably cost 100 times as much per year. You broke down on a Friday and wanted a place open on Saturday. If you broke down on Saturday, would you need a place open on Sunday? What if you broke down Christmas Eve, do you need to be towed to a repair facility open on Christmas?
And you are also kind of complaining about the shop it was towed to. Should you get to dictate the shop as well? Should they be required to tow you to the nearest dealer? Say you had a Foretravel and it broke down in Bangor, Maine. Should you be able to say you want it towed to the factory in Texas, since all Foretravels are sold from the factory and there are no dealers?
While it would be nice if all repair facilities were available at your beckoning call, the fact is they almost all have hours of operation. You might want to be grateful you didn't break down in Montana in the middle of the busy season, since RV repair facilities in the area currently have two week or greater waiting periods before they can even look at a rig.

  • They got you to a safe place. The problem with breaking down is that it ruins your whole day, maybe week, or even vacation. I limped into Greenriver years ago with a bad duel tire, spent a relaxing weekend waiting for a Monday shop to open. AAA towed my son to Victorville, a small city, had to wait till Monday for a GMC part. I understand your rant, but you were towed to safety and you had a safe place to sleep...if you could sleep.
Happy Trails, and a better trip next time.
  • I think most of us know that being a weekend the possibility of getting a break down repair before Monday could exist. Do you have a computer? If so you could have searched and found out maybe who's open and who's not first. I avoid traveling on Sundays for that very reason. Saturdays can be a gamble, your going to have to wait until Monday anyway. Hope the rest go's well. I think GS did there job.
