Just For The Record

Recently purchased National General Insurance for my TT. Price was reasonable and service prompt and courteous. I was quickly emailed my policy. Policy reflected my deal with a 11 dollars miscellaneous charge, all OK fine. I had said my wife would put it on our bill pay if it was ok to make payments. I was told great no problem. I then received an email with a 10 month payment schedule. Seemed fine.

But, when we were creating an online bill pay for it today we added up the 11 payment total (deposit plus 10 month payments)and realized that without reflecting it on our contract or having it noted as a line item cost on our emailed payment schedule, we were being charged 50 dollars for being allowed to make payments. Called NG to confirm it was a payment/finance charge.

Fifty dollars is not a deal breaker for us, but I certainly don't recall it being mentioned on the phone or we would have decided to pay in full. Nor did it stand out as a line item charge on our emailed payment schedule. --- Just saying.

  • It is likely that that additional charge is only applied if you do, in fact, take that long to pay. Verify to be sure but, most likely, if you pay for the rest of the year now, you won't be paying the remaining additional fees.

In my opinion, they are either so accustomed to receiving monthly payment from customers that it slips their mind to discuss annual payment... or they intentionally "slip" so that they make more on the finance fees. Hard to say which is more likely, these days.
  • My company, state farm, charges $1 per month with auto pay.
  • Our ins co let's us pay 10 months, quarterly or twice a year but if you don't pay in full they charge $6 every payment. We pay in full at every renewal.
  • We have been paying ours on a 4 month cycle for the year.
Haven't seen any charges like that.
So far they have been a good company. Have been with them for the last 3 years.
