As mentioned, National General Insurance used to be GMAC. Don't let the words "Camping World Insurance" or "Good Sam Insurance" confuse you. Camping World/Good Sam is only a brokerage. If you call to get a quote or get one online, they will automatically quote you through National General. However, as a brokerage, they can and do underwrite under other insurance companies. The caveat is that you have to ask them to quote you under other insurance companies/brands. To me, that is not holding up to a true brokerage that is working for you.
4 years ago, we traded in our TT for a motorhome. We had Allied Insurance (purchased through camping world 3 years previously) with the TT. When we called to get a quote on the motorhome, they automatically quoted us with National General. It was nearly twice as high as what we were thinking it would be and what the camping world finance manager though it would be. I asked the person on the phone to quote us under Allied. I had to give all the information again to her (this is will be important a little later in my story). The quote I got back was nearly half the price for the exact same coverage. Matter of fact, the lady told me it was the same coverage and the same level. 3 years ago there was some talk about insurance on the forum. I had a private message with Bob Fulcher (then VP of Insurance Services at Camping World). I asked him why we are automatically quoted under National General and if it had anything to do with higher commissions. Below was his response.....
You are partially correct in your assumption. National General does pay higher commissions compared to the other carriers we represent. They also provide the most comprehensive coverage and the largest discounts for Good Sam members. That being said, my instructions to our agents has been to present National General first only if the price is competitive with the other companies; presenting NGIC when they are twice as high is a definite error by the agent. NGIC is also the only company that we presently have available for online quoting. If someone requests a quote from our website, they will get a NGIC quote.
Thanks for your message and your business.
So straight from the horses mouth. But remember when I told you up above that I had to give the lady all my information a second time to get a quote through a different company? If they tell their agents to ONLY give NGIC quotes ONLY if they are competitive. Um half price is not competitive. How can it be an error from the agent if the agent had to ask me the information a second time? They never looked up any other companies!
The only thing I know about NGIC is that their quote from me was nearly twice as high as other insurance. I know that they paid we well when one of their customers hit me and totaled my car a couple years ago.
But I do know it's a sham of Camping World is doing with automatically quoting people through them because of the higher commissions. To automatically quote them through the website. Those who do not know any better do not understand this practice of theirs and in my eyes is deceitful.
