National General just cancelled my Homeowners Ins.

I just received notice of non renewal of my Homeowners Insurance from National General underwritten by Homesite Ins of California.

Never had a claim. They decided they don't like the area I live in since they have new standards for wildfire designated areas.

Since I like to have all my eggs in one basket for the best price, this means potentially cancelling my vehicle coverage with National General also.

Maybe National General can find another underwriter, or not.

  • State Farm still provides homeowners insurance in Florida just not areas that are due for destruction by the first hurricane that comes along. If you want to live in areas that will be severely impacted by storms be prepared to pay.
  • You can thank Florida for that!

They set the precedent when the State allowed State Farm to 'completely' back out of insuring homes here. Thousands where left without homeowners insurance with one swift chop of the cancel ax.

AND then just this past year after a long court battle they allowed Citizens to cancel hundreds of thousands of home owner insurance policies. Claiming they were carrying way too many policies that could be a determent to their company if any disaster hit. Leaving many homeowners mad, angry, confused, bewildered and now without insurance.

If you decide to buy down here whether it be a winter getaway or permanent, be sure to count the miles from the coast to where the house is located BEFORE you sign on the dotted line!
Because they are flat out NOT insuring any house within X amount of miles from any coastal line. the miles inland varies from country to county.

I am from the Midwest and to say I had sticker shock the first time I tried to get homeowners insurance down here is an understatement.

Soooo be prepared you will soon see many other states doing the same thing. :R
  • We have and are happy with Hartford for our vehicles. BUT they will not do our home, as we are in a mobile home in coastal Florida. Allstate also will not cover our home. Sometimes we wonder is any insurance company not greedy!

Good luck in finding coverage you are happy with.
  • I feel your pain. State Farm cancelled thousands of policies in south Louisiana after hurricane Katrina. Even though we built our new home on higher ground in a less prone area, they still wouldn't take the risk. I hope you don't find that all major insurers follow suit like what happened to us. We had to go to a state sponsored insurance program where our rates doubled.

    Good luck.
