Plotting stops in the Road Trip Planner

Just starting to organize a trip from PA to Flagstaff AZ and on to Marina Del Rey CA. I'd like to use the planner and wish to select GoodSam campgrounds along the way. Is there a simple way to plot sites for a 350+/- mile day???
  • To All,

Due to inactivity closing this thread at this time.

  • You can do it easily with Delorme's mapping program. You can set it by the miles you want to go or how many hours you want to drive. You can add vias to the places/routes you want to travel. Not everyone wants the fastest most direct route. We love secondary roads.
  • I personally like Rand Mcnally - TripMaker - http://tripmaker.randmcnally.com/

From my experience, set your starting location, then your final destination. Then go back, add all the places in between. Sometimes, you may have to drag a spot up or down the list. If you want to go a different way than it suggests, you may have to add a location along the route you want to make the map adjust.

I like TripMaker because once you get your route all figured out, you can select the "Things to Do" tab, then select options along the route that you are interested in. I set mine for 30 miles within my route.

Google maps used to be my favorite, but they changed it so you are limited on the amount of stops (10 I think). Sometimes I will use Google Maps to get the addresses I want and then plug them into TripMaker.
  • Use the GS camping guide to find the next GS CG???

We use the Allstays Camp and RV app which gives us a lot more than GS CGs.
  • We use roadtrippers phone app with the bulk of the prep work done on the desk top at home over a couple of weeks. GSC will tell you about bridges and such, but our TT is only 10'3" so we've never had a problem. It may seem like extra work to take the info from roadtrippers and then enter it into GSC, but well worth it if you are concerned about tunnels, bridges, and LP restrictions. Once you know if there are any worries, you can use RT for the rest of the trip. Or read the traffic signs along the way.

Roadtrippers links to / automatically opens google maps on my cell for free navigation. No need to buy the GSC navigation.
  • Paper map and a highlighter. :R

I discovered with my Tom Tom, about the only way to plot alternative routes that involve stops, is to simply load the destinations we want to stop at. Say in a 3 day travel time, we plan to stay at 2 different campgrounds over night, our final destination the 3rd night, and a specific site to visit each day. That's a total of 6 destinations.

Load each destination and save them. Then when leaving home, simply punch in the first destination, or first attraction on days one and follow Tom Tom. Once at the first point of interest, bring up the second destination, which is the campground for the first night. From home to point A is the first leg of the journey. At point A now bring up point B (the campground first night) and follow the directions. And just keep repeating. Basically, you reach the first destination and then punch in the next destination.

I've tried using the Good Sam trip planner with ZERO success. It seems to work OK from your start point to one destination point. But adding multiple destination points along a planned route, .... well ... I never figured it out. So maybe that is the secret to making it work. Home to point A and save that part of the trip. Point A to point B and save that part of the trip as new route, and so on. I don't know if Good Sam Trip planner will let you do that or not, I gave up using it some time ago. Especially now that I figured out my Tom Tom, I'm OK with this method.
