Road side assistance

I'm a snow bird from November till May. This year from Michigan to Floriada I blew out 4 Chinese tires. I brought these tire because that is all the four tire shops had on te shelves! Then in Ga. I blew the high pressure line on my diesel and ad to be towed both the truck and 5th wheel. I'm home in Micigan and am buying Good---- 14 ply tires. But in the mail I got a letter informing me that I was a good customer for Sam's ---- BUT MY ROADSIDE assistance was CANCELED so if you travel more than a couple a days a year be carefull were you get your roadside assistance it could be canceled at ANYTIME !

Good Sam has indicated several times that Allstate provides the call center/dispatching.

Personally I get free roadside assistance as a membership benefit for belonging to the American Motorcyclist Association. They actually cover vehicles that Good Sam refuses to cover.

Thanks everyone for the posts. All due respect, it is very well written, but completely inaccurate. We do not partner with Agero, nor have we for 8 years. Additionally, our members give us the highest ratings in the RV Roadside Assistance industry. Our team of Dispatchers and RV technicians work hard every day to provide our members with the best possible service. We dispatch over 140,000 services per year and have done so for over 30 years successfully.

I will gladly discuss further with anybody who would like to send me a private message with contact info.

I sincerely appreciate this forum and the ability it gives to express my opinion.

    Thank you for listening.

At the time I left, Good Sam was using Agero. Thanks for the update, but it doesn't matter which no-name call center company you are using if you don't make a profit, right? And motorhomes are EXPENSIVE to tow. It's basically insurance folks. If EVERYBODY pays $99 a year for roadside, and every time you call in for a tow it costs them $300-500 which is not unreasonable to tow your rig, they're losing money on you, but still have a pool of other folks who have paid but never used their roadside. As soon as that gap narrows, however, and providers start refusing service over lowball rates and payment issues, you can and will have longer wait times and shoddier service as the club scrambles to find someone willing to work for peanuts. It's basic economics and that's how it works in the motor club industry, no matter what spin the club reps like to put on it. For those of you that feel like you've gotten your money's worth, you should feel very fortunate. Others, not so much, and unfortunately it's getting worse. An easy google search of consumer ratings gives Good Sam 3 out of 5 stars. Is that the highest rating in the industry?:)

  • This explains a lot, well written and has so much truth to it. Thanks for filling in the reasons so many folks get such bad service.

let me enlighten you even further......it doesn't surprise me you were cancelled. I was in the road service industry for 12 years as a provider. many towing and road service companies like me quit or sold out due to motor clubs like Good Sam beating down prices on what they were willing to pay us as contracted providers. They wanted guys to change a tire on a MH for 30 bucks at 3 in the morning. No thanks. Then they started playing around with mileage reimbursements and shorting checks, etc. Now they are scrambling for providers because no one will run their calls anymore, and the ones that do will only do credit card upfront at a much fairer rate (now they actually lose money on some calls), no PO accepted and waiting 30-60 days to get a shorted payment. Good Sam contracts with a broker called Agero, which hold dozens of OEM contracts and provides a call center for road service. Agero used to be known as Cross Country motor club, but just about the time I quit they changed names as they were getting worse with treatment of vendors that provided road service. Sorry for you, but I'm loving it. It's payback now and they are getting what they deserve- motor clubs are a blight on the industry and a middleman that needs to be cut out like a wart. Until this industry is rid of them, expect longer wait times and increasing annual fees as they can only do such to offset their loss of profits.

  • Kalynzoo: Let me add to your knowledge base. I fulltimed for 14.5 yrs and put on slightly less than 400,000 miles during that time. I had roadside assistance available for each and every one of those miles/years. And though I recall a number of years without making a call for help, I also remember some yrs with 2 or more calls and one year with 5 calls. Some of the calls included a major tow truck to tow in my International 4700 plus 40' fiver. I never rec'd a warning, cautionary letter or phone call telling me I was 'walkin the edge' of my coverage nor was my coverage ever cancelled.

Course I never used one of the companies like Coachnet or Good Sam that likes to sell stand alone (overpriced) ERS insurance either. I price shopped my truck and 5ver insurance each year and always placed both units on one policy or at least a single carrier. I added an ERS rider to my 5ver coverage which automatically covered my tow vehicle as well even when in non towing use. As I recall, the rider generally ran $35 +/- per year and I presume when looking at an ERS claim, the company took into consideration that they had a lot more premium (for the truck & fiver) riding on the line than just selling me ERS.

The ins. companies (other than AAA which would be a horrible choice for an RVer) uses the same national dispatching services as the specialty road service insurers - it's just the 800 number is answered in your insurer's name rather than Coachnet's etc. name.
  • True of every (to my knowledge) roadside assistance program. They limit you to 2 or three calls a year or your out.
  • Thank you tjdblwd for your post - I would like to review with you further. Would you please send me a private message with your phone number and member number?

    Thanks in advance.
