Serious questions about insurance roadside coverage etc

Purchased a 2005 National Dolphin picking it up in a week. I have to drive it 910 miles home and would like to have roadside coverage. My wife and I plan to full time in 6-12 months from now. I want coverage for most everything! :) I've looked over Goodsam and coach.net. Coach.net seems to over the most coverages, but I want to hear from other hear.

Also, should we just add the RV to our existing auto policy or is there something out there better? I want my investment covered. Also, what about content type coverages. And last but not least, would an extended warranty be adviseable?

Any other tips anyone can offer is greatly appreciated.

  • OK, I'll start the show. My TT is insured by State Farm, the same company that insures my house and all my vehicles. It has its own policy, as does each vehicle. I think contents are insured up to a certain dollar value but, frankly, would have to check to be sure. For roadside assistance, I added RV coverage to my existing AAA membership for an additional $35 a year. Can't comment on the service as I've never had to use it for the trailer. But I've been an AAA member for 45 years and have no complaints yet. As for extended warranties, I think they're a waste of money.
  • Usually, the R/A coverage you will have on your auto insurance won't do much for you and the RV....and if it does cover the RV, you may find that it is very limited in what it will do. Just compare it to Coach-Net and Good Sam to see the differences. Same goes for AAA.....it's geared more for automobiles and light trucks.
Coach-Net will cover all any vehicle you are in....if it's your vehicle, or belongs to someone else. Their comment is "you are being inconvenienced, even if you are a passenger in someone's vehicle." That works for me:)
Coach-Net has just come out with a Premium Policy....a few more bells and whistles, which may or may not be to your liking. You really have to look at the policies side by side, and see which fits YOU best.....what I may want, you may not.

As far as content insurance, you may want to talk with your Agent. If you will be keeping your home, the Homeowner's Insurance should or your RV Insurance should cover the contents of the vehicle. After all, it really is just a vehicle, but you can always pay extra for special "riders" that will cover extras.

Depending on the age of your RV, you may decide to get the Extended Maintenance Insurance (it's really not an actual warrany extension, since it isn't from the mfgr.). Like all insurance, it's a gamble. If you have the money to set aside, you can "self-insure", and save the money that would be going to some company.

Of course, it may make sense to pay for a year of coverage, just in case.....and you will spent time learning about your RV and it's systems. More than likely, if there is going to be a problem, it will happen in that time frame.

    Good Luck:)
