05 ambassador cummins engine temp hot

We are on a trip west with a 05 ambassador with the cummins 330hp engine and we are having issues with the engine temp gauge reading hot. We took it to a cummins place and they said the fan clutch was leaking and only running at 70 percent effi ciency...so we had another clutch installed hoping that would fix the issue and it seemed to be working for the first two hours...it would go up to the red zone, fan would kick on and it would drop down to 200 again. But then it all of a sudden went to the midle of red zone and we quickly slowed down and stopped to let it cool down. Fan still appeared tobe running at full speed. Any ideas what could be going on? Does the temp gauge have an issue maybe? We were driving about 68mph just south of bismark nd.
  • Havnt been able to locate a ir gun as we are traveling thru the night. Right now its hovering at the red mark but not going over, iam thinking maybe its the gauge, as I checked the acess cover in the back while driving and the fan was running and it didnt seem to smell hot. Doesnt the engine derate if it gets too hot? That is seperate from the gauge?

Also if engine is overheating will the coolant level go down? In the 10 hour trip I havnt noticed the coolant level drop at all

    Not necessarily.

  • We are going to try and pick up a ir gun here somewhere...where should we point it too? Thanks alot for the thoughts..we are making our way to glacier and worried about the steep mountain climbs
  • It tach is "wacky" wonder if the temperature gauge is accurate???

So, first step is to use an IR gun to confirm that the engine is actually overheating and not just a gauge issue.

As far as overheating, have you cleaned the FRONT of the CAC and radiator?

Other issue could be a thermostat that is sticking-- an inexpensive replacement.
