0W 20 oil in my 6.8 L V. 10

Thinner oil provides better startup lubrication.

I run 0W-40 in my V10. Silky smooth on cold starts regardless of temp, but it also cuts my oil consumption when towing heavy, and it sounds a lot better at 5,000 RPM with that oil vs 5W20. My combined weight is 24,000 pounds, and my terrain is mostly mountains.

The main downside is oil cost is almost double, but I just let it go twice as long between changes.

You said it is a 2013 so the chassis is still under warranty so you should use the proper oil that the manufacture has clearly stated for you. Maybe purchased the oil before the change. why mix oils in newer motor ?

You are correct. Ford had been having an massive top end failure rate on the modular engines (4.6 5.4 and 6.8) and found it was oil starvation on cold start. This was found to be the fault of heavier 5W/30 oil that was spec'ed. There was two TSB's published on this in 2002 to use 5W/20.

I use Mobile 1 5W/20 and Motorcraft filter. If you do your research you will find that the Motorcraft filter's have one of the best synthetic media elements in the filter market, and the flow rate is correct for the engine.

This oil spec shows the correct answer, does the oil meet Ford's WSS-M2C930-A spec? The Mobil 1 0w-20 AFE oil meets that spec meaning it is approved for use by Ford. If your 0W-20 meets WSS-M2C930-A then you are good to go from Ford's perspective.

I love these threads. Everyone knows better than the folks that built the engine.

But within what temperature range? The op is in California, 0W30 is going to pour like water at this time of year. That oil is more suited to Fairbanks in January, it won't provide adequate lubrication on start up in warm climates.
I would even hesitate using 5W30 during summer in any engine, our gasser gets 10W30, the diesel 15W40 but it is up the individual owner. It's his nickel.

I have been using 0W20 OIL IN MY LAST 2 v10'S and they both ran fine. After all, it is a 20 weight oil and only turns to 0 weight when it gets really cold! 5W20 is also a 20 weight oil. My son-in-law runs 5w40 in his! He has over 150K miles with no problems.
