1989 Southwind Electric

I have a 1989 Southwind 30E that is having some electrical problems. The RV has 2 Air Conditioners with a front and back switch when you use the 30 amp shore power, but allows you to use both when running the 6500 watt generator. Where and how is this done? I also am looking for a wiring diagram for the power convertor. If any one knows where I can find it?
  • Your generator has 2 circuit breakers. 30 amp for the main panel and a 20 amp for the second A/C. The 20 amp breaker feeds the unselected A/C through the selector switch.
Some of us with that system have interrupted the 20 amp service at the generator so we can run the second A/C with a extension cord.

  • There is a mod you can add so you can use both A/Cs while using shore power. Add an additional heavy duty switch like the one in the cupboard at the generator where it cones off that 20 amp line. The switch selects either the generator or an additional power cord. I added a 30 amp cord. I used a 20 amp adapter and plugged it into to 20 amp outlet. It was quite popular in the late 80s when most parks only had 30 amps.
  • Since the OP's other thread got closed for multiple posting, I'll move my two cents worth, over to here .....

I have 2 A/Cs on my rig. I can run 1 at a time when on shore power by using a A/B switch and both when on the generator. My question is where and how is the done? At the convertor or in the control box. I am having a problem with my a/c and this maybe my problem. Thanks

Whatever the problem, the best way to mod the rear ac, is with a dual power adapter, so that you can run the rear ac on a separate pedestal circuit when on shore power, instead of the PITA procedure of switching back and forth. RLS7201 has pretty much shown this and the instruction manuals not only explain how to do this with whatever your setup might be, but also include diagrams showing the different versions and what you're now looking for with the selector switch.
PM me with an email addy and I'll send you a zip file with everything that I have on this.
Your power converter is another story and if original I would just replace it with one that is much more efficient and easier on the the batteries, as well. I have a recommendation on this as well, if interested.
