1994 Fleetwood Southwind Diesel, no power to dash

Hi,

I'm currently "parked" in a truck stop parking lot in Michigan as currently have no power to the dash.

When turning ignitionkey the oil pressure gauge shows some signs of life, everything else remains dark as can be.

Replaced a 5A fuse in the Chassis Electrical box labeled IR0 (I think) on the schematic. After replaced this I was able to use the momentary switch labeled Auxiliary Start to get full power to the front dashboard (all the lights lit up, etc).

All fuses (now) appear to be good (though some gauges that were added to coach aren't functioning but that's been this way for couple weeks as can't seem to find inline fuse).

Main starting battery has 14.24 volts in it so pretty sure that's not the problem.

When I flip the Main Battery Disconnect switch I hear the "thunk" indicating that it's working, so am assuming that's fine.

Found this checklist in another post regarding someone else having issues (forget where saw it now), so filling it out.

When the ignition/key is turned on, what happens:
1. Allison shift pad illuminates?
2. Things such as dash HVAC fan that only work with ignition on work?
3. Click at starter?
4. Have you checked voltage at the starter before and while trying to start?

When just turn key:
1 NO
2 NO
3 NO
4 Haven't looked

When use Auxiliary Start switch (while pressed down)
1. Yes, N / N
2. Yes
3. Haven't tried starting
4. Haven't tried starting

Other suggestions? This seems to point to one of the relays mentioned during some searches.

NOTE: Had problem yesterday, and not sure what fixed it, but used jumper cables between house batteries and main engine batteries (didn't work at first), had diesel generator running, and nothing would come to life. It eventually did and not sure why, but last steps were tightening down battery connector (was little loose but not much), adjusting jumper cables (between house and engine batteries), and something else which I forgot.

EDIT: Since have owned this RV (September 2013) have only tried Auxiliary start switch couple times and never worked (just to see what it did), but after replaced 5A fuse noted above, it does something now.

  • Please advise what "battery Breaker"?
Most 12 volt circuit breakers have a small button to push, not a switch.
  • Haven't had time to look around much more, nor clean everything. I have been at a campground for about a week and called garage today to schedule an appointment for them to look at it.

While on the phone with them flipped main battery breaker to on and turned the key. This time the dash lit up like normal, though didn't try starting. Everything seemed fully functional at this point.

Based on this, not quite sure it's a fused link, almost seems like some sort of relay problem. If it's not happening when bring it to a mechanic, not quite sure they'll be able to fix it.

    Will keep this thread updated.

I am open to checking more things.

The battery terminals are solid and nothing is corroded. At one point the battery terminal was loose (not corroded), but fixed that. After fixed it that didn't fix this problem, but today it worked fine, so can't rule that out as a potential cause.
  • Sounds like a loose and/or corroded battery connection at the chassis battery. Remove, clean and re-tighten them all.
  • Cleaning the ton of negative cable connections has always did it for us. Just moving them a bit ways got us going for the mean time.
  • Found a power panel that contains a bunch of fuses, but don't see anything which remotely looks like could be a fused link.

Got description of a fused link from this page:

Haven't checked engine compartment yet but did look at, and around, the starter, and nothing. See on the wiring diagram how there's a handful of fused links, one going to the ignition, another to the headlights, one to stop lamp switch, and one more to the brake pump relay.

Will look some more tonight before dark.

BTW, was in Moses Lake this past fall, it's a really nice place! Stayed at small RV park right on the lake, was wonderful.
  • No power to dash would indicate a control power.
Look around the starter solenoid for a fuse link.
It or a main fuse could be in power panel adjacent to the engine.
Locate your battery disconnects. There could be a fuse/circuit breaker adjacent to it.
  • Oskosh chassis.

Was looking at some other search results and see some mention an ignition solenoid.
  • What chassis?
There could be a fuse link adjacent to the starter main battery post.
