1994 p30 Winnebago warrior fuel pressure issue

Just got back from a short trip due to loss of power issue.

1994 Winnebago 454 fuel injected motor.

We had traveled 80+ miles up a couple pretty good inclines with no problems. Had plenty of power and running smooth. We came into a small town where the elivation was about 3500 feet. The engine started acting like it was running out of fuel. If you gave it a little to much throttle it sounded like it was just sucking air and would slow down. If I pumped the gas pedal a couple times it would take off for a few seconds then start bogging again.

I had 3/4 tank of fuel but decided to fill it up just incase. Same thing.

I changed the fuel filter and same thing so I figured it was the fuel pump. I installed a fuel pressure gauge and it showed around 5psi. I installed a new fuel pump and same low pressure so I figured it might be the fuel pressure regulator. I got a rebuild kit and put it in and same problem.

If I blocked off the return line pressure would jump to 50+ psi.

I ended up putting some vice grips on the return line and adjusted them so I had about 20 psi. Took it for a test ride and it ran pretty good so I headed back home and made it.

After I got home I unplugged the fuel pump harness at the tank and connected 12volts and same low fuel pressure.

Any idea why I have such low fuel pressure?

This Warrior is a Class A motorhome, but chassis/engine problems for A or C or a towing vehicle are best addressed in the Tech Issues forum.
You got good advice, fuel pressure regulator. Just don't be surprised if a Moderator moves your thread. Anybody used to looking at it here will see a note that it was moved.
  • It has to be the fuel pressure regulator. There is nothing else in the loop.
On edit: maybe buy the whole assembly new instead of a rebuild kit. I found them for $85 and less at Rock.
