1995 Safari Sahara/UPDATE
I have read way back on the forum archive about the good the bad and the ugly for Safari Sahara's. But I saw nothing on prices and I understand that prices can't be firmly established but how about a guesstimate? I'm looking at a '95 with a B5.9 turbo engine and Magnum Blue Streak chassis, six speed Alison MD3060 and two overdrives. It has 75K miles and is immaculate.
I'm not thrilled with the LPG genny and don't think I'd keep the W/D but it has newer tires, new mattress, solar system, two start batteries, 4 12volt chassis batteries and a new backup camera system.
I've never really wanted a DP(except for a Beaver and towed pair we saw up in Santa Barbara) and I've always said not over 32 feet but this is 35 so the DW worries about driving it. We have been looking at resale rentals and for the same price as the ones we like in the Class C's the price is almost the same. We are almost done with the remodel of the S&B and our open savings account is close to being depleted so we are diving into the last of our disposable savings accounts and a nicer RV is one thing we want.
We have been to all fortynine continental states and have a lot of places we want to revisit, we're thinking maybe 6 months a year on the road in two or three phases.
The only real drawback is the lack of levelers, my knees and back are tired of bending and carrying those da## leveling ramps. I can change out the TVs and DVD for flat panels and BluRay. But those ramps are a pain and I'm not about to install them myself.
So between a 28 to 30K for a rental class c with +/- 100K miles or a Safari DP with 75K for $25K? Which one do I choose. Any Pro's or Con's you can think of?
I finally got to go through the Sahara and I must agree it seems to be much bigger than it is, but, it is in really poor condition. Dinette chairs are filthy and worn, recliner is filthy, there is a lot of corrosion under the paint and quite a few cabinet doors don't close right or are horribly out of alignment. The clear coat is coming off in dollar bill size pieces.
So I decided to look for a DP in the 1995 to 2005 era because I was thinking there may be a good one out there like you folks said. I've found a few locally(150 mile radius). Then I found a real deal, almost, no not almost, it is to good to believe.
A 19999(sic) Newell Mountainair M4060 with 59K miles for $7900 and would you believe owned by a guy in the Air Force in Utah that just got promoted and transferred to Elmendorf in Anchorage. He is having his brother sell it for him and it is advertised in several different areas. There was only one picture and no other info other than the mileage.
Don't you think that I should look into this further, it's only a few miles from where I live. I'd know it as soon as I saw it, no license plates and everything is perfect in the pictures he sent me.
Should I worry about this being a scam? I don't think so...
