For Prevost coaches, an EGR system was required on 2004 units to current.

Obviously, it varies for different engine manufacturers.

Caterpillar didn't appear to use the EGR system until 2007 manufactured year.

A lot of 2007 coaches had 2006 engines which didn't have the EGR system and all that came with it. My 2007 Discovery has a C7 Cat but is a 2006 engine which doesn't have the pollution attachments. Just an opinion but when a piston melts on a diesel it usually is a faulty injector with a faulty spray pattern. I replaced a faulty 5.9 Cummins some years ago with a Cummins rebuild and the bill was $19,000. The labor to remove and install the new engine is what gets you. We just looked at it as it's better than an accident where somebody got badly injured or killed. Iron can be replaced, but one has to lick your wounds for a while. Good luck.

Before exercising the 25K option you have a lot of homework in the form of researching and shopping around to do for more reasonably priced engines. There are many salvage companies dealing in these engines and parts of all kinds for motorhomes.

Visone Auto Mart in Bernhart Ky. comes to mind and it is fairly close to your neck of the woods. There are dozens of others accessible on the internet. But most certainly you can do better than 25K.

C7S followed by 5 numbers these engines use a high pressure common rail fuel system with a diesel particulate filter and require periotic regeneration to burn the soot from the particulate filter was the failure a scored cyl from overheat or a broken ring or a hole in a piston most likely caused by a faulty injector either way there would be a lot of damage to the to the emission control systems on the exhaust side of the engine and this can get expensive
if it is a 2004 emission engine with the heui fuel system which is possible if it is a early production 2007 coach it would be less expensive these blocks can be sleeve also short blocks and complete engines are available for either one but there is no cheap option
do some research and get a good estimate from a reliable repair shop
also check the network for after repair warranty service. there is a difference between authorized CAT dealers and independent warrantys

I've never heard of this being a problem with the CAT engine either. Typically, a burnt piston is cause by the fuel mixture becoming too lean. Did you notice anything different, unusual noise or performance issues prior to the failure? Also, I don't understand why burning a hole in a piston would prohibit an engine rebuild and as Brett identified, if the cylinder was damaged the block could be sleeved. Then again, if all the oil was "sucked out" then the damage could be more extensive to the block's internal components (remaining pistons, crank, connecting rods, cam, etc.) making it cheaper to replace the entire engine than repairing/replacing the damage parts.

If you have a bad feeling about the CAT, a change to another manufacturer might not be worth it because it would require many external parts to be replaced, ECU (engine computer), turbo, exhaust, maybe even cooling system (radiator) and the list goes on. Sounds like you got the crank from lack of oil plus the pistons.

Unless someone else is paying the $25K there are plenty of other options. New $15K plus freight. A RV low miles $9500 engine
There were a bunch of new high HP C7 sold on Gov Liquidation recently although they may have been 24V.

Plenty of other option than a new engine from Cat...$$$$$$

No way would I try and put a different (cummins) electronic engine in it.

I would be doing a lot of research before I dropped 25k on a new engine.
Did you contact Tiffin to see if they had similar complaints?
Search for Tiffin forums and diesel forums.
I would want to know if the problem can be corrected and I would be hesitant to install the same engine if they are known to fail because of an overheated cylinder.
I've always heard good things about CAT Diesels.
