2008 Monaco Diplomat Electrical Protection

I have a 2008 Monaco 40SFT. Does anyone know if this coach could benefit from the use of a surgeguard surge protector or does the electrical system have surge protection already available. I was told that if the coach already has this capability, adding another protector would actually "confuse" the system in some instances and could let spikes through damaging components. Any help?

  • Bought our rig new in Dec2007. So far we have had the Norcold 1210 replaced, rear a/c control bd replaced, rear furnace control bd replaced, new thermostats in the HWH. I had the seal on the super slide replaced 3 years ago and it needs to be done again as it's coming loose. I had my dealer seal the gap between the two metal halves that the awning connects to on the coach but I suspect the metal fingers on the gasket rusted out again. All these issues were covered by our extended warranty.

It's been a great coach and has given us very few issues and has never failed to get us where we were going.
  • Just talked to the tech at Monaco. The 2008 Diplomat did not come with factory installed surge protection. Thanks for all the replies.

For NorCal Dan; how long have you owned your coach? Have you come up against any problems that I should be aware of?

  • I can tell you that my 2009 HR did not have a surge protector from the factory.....It does have an Elictrical Management System if plugged into less than 50 amps (like 30 amp service) to shed loads for more primary needs..That being said, I have a progressive surge protector...saved my back end twice now due to badly wired posts...(one had open neutral and one had open ground...happened when we pulled into a campground late so once I saw that, I just stayed on inverter all night)...worth it, definitely...note that NO surge protector can protect you against a direct lightning strike....
  • My Holiday Rambler (sister unit to Monaco) did not come with a surge protector, but does have an EMS (Electrical Management System). One of my first additions was a Hughs Autoformer, which provides surge and voltage protection.
  • Thanks for the post. I could swear that I read in my manual that it had some sort of over/under voltage protection but I'll be darned if I can find it now. I'll have to sit down with it again and I'll call Monaco. Thanks for the phone number. I haven't seen any protector installed, but I'll look again. I'll post when I find something out. Thanks again for the input.

  • If you have a built in surge protector, you will most likely find it attached to the transfer switch. Mine has a Esco, ES50 with surge protector....Dennis
  • Let's assume that the electrical system in my '06 Beaver by Monaco is somewhat similar to yours. Yours may well be even more sophisticated. My manual tells me that the electrical management system from surges, over voltage and under voltage among other things. For instance, if I plug into a power pole with an open ground, my electrical system will not allow contact from the shore power system. It just sits there flashing the message "open ground detected" and the input voltage remains at zero. This actually happened to me once. All these details are covered in my owners' manual but somewhat obscure. The writer of the manual assumed I knew things that I did not know.

Read through your manual carefully and you will learn a lot. Also, call Monaco in Coburg,OR (877-466-6226) for more technical help. They still offer support even if you are out or warranty. Have your coach number ready and they will be looking at the specs specifically for your coach.
