2014 Phaeton 42' LH voltage drop

We have a 2014 Tiffin 42"LH Phaeton. When plugged into shore power you turn the key on and the lights dim a little and I lose 3 volts AC at the outlets. I am told that when you turn on the key the inverter comes on line right away so there is a AC voltage drop. The AC and DC systems are different systems. Anyone understand what is happening here or have had a like problem?

  • I do not run the inverter when hooked to shore power. Have a res refrig so need to run inverter when driving. Other wise leave the inverter off. 50 Amps shore power is enough run my TV and DVD.
  • Sounds like it's working as designed. If the charger turns off the battery voltage can/will drop some for the lights. If the inverter voltage is within spec it's OK. Also the inverter voltage may be higher than shore power in some CGs.

If it were me I'd likely remove the ignition wire from the inverter. We don't automatically and rarely run the inverter when driving.
  • Turn the key off the voltage comes right back. Plug a meter into outlet to check it. Also the LED overhead lights dim a little but come right back when the key is turned off.
  • Need more info. You state when the key is turned on the voltage drops. Does it go back up when the key is off?
  • Shouldn't the inverter be on regardless of the ignition key position?

Just curious, why would you turn the ingition on while plugged in? I know this doesn't help but I am wondering why. Not trying to be crass, I am sure there is a good reason.
