30 amp breaker keeps popping

I have an 07 Safari Damara Class B+ that we bought late last year. We took it to two state parks and found that the A/C, when using 30 amp, would pop the breakers. Switching the refrigerator to gas solved the problem there on 30 amp. At home, plugged into 20 amp 110 wall socket, I could run everything in the coach, including the microwave, a/c, fridge, lights, water heater, etc. etc. all day and never pop a breaker. Could I or Do I have something wrong with my 30 amp breakers or is it the "low-bid" system the state uses for electrical work in their parks? If I have a problem with my breaker, what is the fix?
  • also- have a look at your cable- obviously you are using a different cable at 30A than you are at home.

metal tangs molded into rubber can get loose or corrode internally

  • I suspect it is an RV site problem with power fluctuations. A surge bar protector to prevent spikes tripping your breaker, especially the 30amp ones for power Converter would be a good thing to buy. If you could run the a/c on 20amps at home without a thrown breaker then I don't see anything wrong with your system. To use RV aircon you do need 20Amps anywhere as 15amps on some home plugs will blow house 15amp breaker. Let us know and welcome.

  • I would start by checking all the connections in the 120 volt AC power distribution panel. You could have a loose connection which will increase the amperage.
Disconnect from shore power, remove cover from the AC panel. Inspect the conductors for melted or burnt wires. Look closely in the rear at the neutral buss. this is the one with the white wires.
I would suggest picking up some electrical de-ox grease before you start. Disconnect each conductor one at a time. Clean the copper good, coat the bare copper wire with de-ox and reinstall. Do this for the neutrals and the power conductors attached to the breakers.
Pull each breaker and make sure the buss work where they connect is good and clean with no burnt marks.
  • What breaker(s) exactly is tripped? Pedestal? RV main? Branch circuit? rating?

Do you have an electric water heater or space heater going?

And yes I usually put the fridge and water on propane if the air conditioner is to run for an extended period.
  • Hi Ted,

    Welcome to the forums.

You may be in the market for a device called an autoformer.
  • Your first suspect is voltage. When voltage drops (not uncommon at parks with lots of campers running a/c) amperage rises. That blows breakers. Also, corroded sockets will exacerbate the problem. Got a voltmeter?

Your home voltage is probably much higher.
