460 plug wires

RLS....In my duals I used the orig 02 sensor position as I used the same crossover pipe ,simply welded A CURVED PIPE to go to the the rear to connect my exhaust pipe to.... I will be putting the 02 sensor in the same place........with my headers.... My mufflers are big walker universal ones....fairly quite...our floor temp seems to have cut down a bit. I really want to get rid of my tailpipes....Iam using the orginal ones ,exit on DS....I want to exit on PS between propane tank and duals....have to study this to see if I can fab a double layer aluminum heat shield around the pipes between the two of them.

Placement of your O2 sensor is critical. Note where Ford put it in the "Y" pipe. If you don't use a "X" pipe between your dual pipes, you will get a better torque curve with a LARGE single exhaust.

The gaskets I am using are some weird rubberized thing that came from Thorley. When I swapped engines several years ago, I re-used the same gaskets. They still looked the same as when they were installed. You can dig your nail into the surface and it feels soft, but I don't really know what it is or where to get them. I heard Thorley doesn't supply them any more. You may want to call Doug's Headers. Doug lost Thorley as a result of a divorce, and started Doug's Headers. The wires are some NAPA product. When I first installed the headers, I used the OEM heat shields. When I installed the 502, I switched to the sox. I've not had any problems, so maybe the issue is more the headers and free flowing exhaust. What kind of mufflers are you running? That can work against you, if they don't flow well. Makes the exhaust temps much higher.

Popeye, these heat shields will not fit you 460. They are for 1987 and back 460s. Ford changed the exhaust ports for the EFI engine in 1988.
Your engine came equipped with plug wire heat shields but they were not gaskets.

I installed plug wires similar to these on my 7.4 Chev. I have not burnt any more wires. Temperature rating is higher then most others.

They are rated for 1200 degrees. That is what I use on my coach.

I bought the ones from Summit racing with the FG soxs that cover the spark plug boots. They are 10.4 MM thick and were about $150 at the time. They have about 60k miles on them and 7 years old.

Skillet..is that shield THE gasket or do you use it with a gasket..been looking online and every time I find that shield it says not for 96 460...puzzled.
