52yo guy solo c?

If you've recently become a solo person (divorce, break up, etc.), then I suspect much of your anxiousness and feeling like a "loser" is due to your emotional state. In that case, I would say give it time to adjust to your new circumstances.

Find new hobbies and interests and find ways to incorporate your RVing into them (or them into your RVing).

Start small. Go to the movies alone, go to a local museum, etc. Doing things alone around home will help you realize that not only are people not judging you, but they really aren't looking at you at all. Experiment with things - try a matinee movie instead of an evening showing; try going out to breakfast rather than dinner. Find ways to keep your mind occupied on the sights rather than thinking about your status - photography is a great way to focus on the sights.

If you make reservations for campgrounds (or hotels), just use 2 persons by default. It's not going to cost any different and it's nobody's business. If once you get there someone questions, just say "oh, my friend is going to try to make it up later". No biggie.

Remember that most family groups are going to stay together and aren't usually that open to outliers. Older couples and pairs/groups of women are usually a bit more welcoming. Other solos can go either way - some love their solitude, others are eager for company When out on hikes, have a hello for folks as they pass. A simple "there's a great view about 40 yards back" can open up a conversation. As a solo man, there will be more hesitancy from some people, just accept THEIR issues and go on your way.

...p.s. this started a little while back while trying to make a reservation in maine- I was told "we don't take reservations for men traveling alone"! i couldn't believe my ears.

Find this one hard to believe also! I sure would have sued for discrimination on that one!

There ARE several very good single RV clubs out there. Do a search.
The have rally's, go on trips together etc. They are for both single women and single men who RV. You can participate in all the activities or not. They are a great group of RV'ers.

Escappes is a REAL good club and probably the best one to join and they have a single chapter club.

Keep in mind you are not the lone ranger out there! There are very 'many' full timers who have had spouses pass away that continue to RV on alone just as they had planned for their retirement.

I'm going solo for 34000 miles....wife is all for it....its a bucket list item to follow NASCAR for a season.

I don't feel any difference talking with a single guy or married guy while camping. I think RVers in general are a pretty non-judgmental group. There are plenty of single men and women RVers. You might want to join a singles camping group. Here's one that was at an RV park where I was staying last summer:

I know nothing about the group, but it looked like they were having fun!

Camping groups like Good Sam's Club, and Family Motor Coach Association have campouts. Singles are in the minority. They take part and have a good time.

You don't say where you are. Could you do that? Reason is that there are places where people gather that might provide you with good opportunities.

For other suggestions...if you have a dog? walking a dog is a sure fire way to meet people. Same goes for cycling.

I have traveled solo often..and will be again for 6 weeks come mid-March, and yes, it can be hard. There are some dating sites...Plenty-of-Fish, for one, that also shows meeting times and places...people gather someplace, have conversation and on their way. You don't gotta be looking for a date..it just gives one a chance to meet people and chat.

I'm single, never married, and have been all over the country except Washington, Oregon and Hawaii for over 10 years. I always stay at FHU parks. I've been asked a few times, but that was so they could give me a site away from the playground or dog park. I don't care one way or the other.

I am much older than you, have lived alone for thirty years and been a solo RVer for 24. Solo campers were rare when I began, are becoming more common every year. Being alone takes getting used to. Persist, do what you enjoy, and you will be fine.

As to the discrimatory campground, you could fight it in court or just go somewhere else. My choice would be to go somewhere else.

In AZ state parks last winter, there were always one or two guys by themselves. I talked to a couple of them. They seemed to be sightseeing, mostly, or just enjoying the winter weather. One had a motorcycle with sidecar, and took his dog for a ride every day. If you try state parks, national parks, and similar venues, you'll fit right in. In private CG's they'll probably assume you are working and living in your RV. Although every time we are in a private CG any more, there are always permanent residents, so I'd be surprised they even question it.

I'm no psychologist, but I imagine your anxiety about what people think about you RV-ing alone is part of the overall struggles you're having. Really, there are lots of solo RVers, so try not to let that bother you.
