92 cummins 5.9 info please

Does anyone have experience with early 90's 5.9 Cummins with Allison 4 speed trans? Coach is Monaco 32 Footer.would like to know about reliability,MPG etc... Thanks

  • The injection pumps are bullet proof too.
    The only thing is that the trans has no lockup converter and is only a 4 speed.
    I'd look for something around '96 or any motorhome with a 6 speed trans.
    However there should be no problems if you decide on the 92, outside of the dowel pin as noted before.
    Mine had 68k before I did the dowel pin and it was a third of the way out.
  • Do a search on "killer dowel pin" and apply preventative fix. Not a show stopper.
  • Very reliable. The Cummins 5.9 6BT 12 valve engine is bullet proof and very reliable. They did have a pump problem, but I'd guess your has been replace long ago. The Allison MT 643, which I would guess it has, has been proven in countless garbage trucks, fire trucks, and even buses around this country. I get 10 mpg with mine, with a 2600 lb toad, running the open road. I would say conservatively that you should get at least 9 mpg + with it. I gross under 24,000 lbs GCWR. Have 126,000 miles on mine.
