A to B

Well folks we are thinking of selling our 40 ft foretravel, and getting something like a 21 chinook, and spending one out of every 3 or so days in a motel...it has gotten so rrv parks are half the cost of a motel, and the bus plus toad are like moving the queen Mary...last few trips we took my truck with the wife and dog and stayed in motels...had a better time too.....opinions...anyone gone this direction...The guys at Motorhomes of tx say we will only get depressed after haveing an a class...But then a good friend traveled the whole usa in his chinook 21 and loved it...opinions on good b class vehicles? stuck between a chinook 21 , a gulfstream yellowstone 23 , and a coachhouse 23 at the moment...Let us know what you think...thanks...dave and wendy.....
  • If you are just going places it should be alright...before kids I had a B after kids we had a C because we only went mostly on weekend trips and skiing in the winter----now no kids, still don't live in it and we have a high end BIG DP.....I think we would be perfectly happy with another C if we didn't have the heavy race car trailer to pull.....Wife thinks vacations are airplanes, Europe, and room service........its just nice to have your vacation "house" with you no matter the size.
  • We have an 40' Class A & a R-vision B+ 213. The B+ (21') is fine for a "vacation rig". We spent from May 19th until August 4 this year in our B+ on an Alaska trip with friends in their C (24'). But I was very glad when we changed the B+ for the A in storage. We have talked about going back a few years in age to a Foretravel or Newell with one or no slides, but to full time in a small 21' motorhome, no way. I prefer to explore after we set up without tearing down. The biggest pain w/o the big rig was no Splendide washer/dryer and no toad.
  • I hear ya, we just sold our Class A / tow car this summer. Heading south this fall we hotel'ed it. We had wonderful suit hotels for anywhere between 50-75 dollars. It did take research to find them, but then again so did finding good RV parks.

What I did find out is we missed the freedom of RV'ing. The ability to just pull off and spend as long as we wanted in a place. Hotel mode was rushing so as to limit costs.

Current plan is to pick up a small 5'ver with slide and hotel every few days or when needed. Class B's seem way too much $$ for what you get. With a C I'm tired of having a whole drive train that I have to maintain, yet which gets used so little. A slide in camper is just too small as is a van camper.

That leaves a TT or small 5'ver. Seems like a TT is a bear to pull long distances from those I talk too.
  • Hotels and Motels, eating out, nasty gas station restrooms, bed bugs, lugging suit cases in and out, dirty carpets, dirty top blanket and sheets, no thanks I will keep my motorhome.

Maybe that 40 footer was to big, go smaller say around 32-36 ft.

Hunt down more free dry camp spots and really safe money.
  • Well, one thing to think about is that not all hotels take pets. I certainly understand you wanting to downsize, especially, if you think your rig is now TOO big. You are smart for thinking about comfort and maneuverability. Things change in life and you are apparently recognizing that fact.

We are currently thinking of moving up to a 45 ft. from our 42 ft. which should last us for at least 10 more years. WAY in the future I might do exactly what you are thinking about.

If I were to consider downsizing like you are talking about, I would look at something on the Sprinter Chassis (diesel, better mileage).... The Winnebago View has a slide out which would give you a little more room.

We, too, have a washer and dryer (as another poster mentioned) and would hate to give that up but downsizing takes sacrifices.

    Good luck!
    MM.

    X2
One other coach to look at would be Born Free. You may also want to look at Dynamax.
  • My wife and I own 3 RV's (long story) and have 5 children.

We have a Bounder Class A
    We have a travel trailer
and a Class C toyota (smaller 4 cylinder)

Let me tell you, as far as function, ease of use, simplicity of driving, and gas mileage, we really like the class C Toyota the best. It drives like a LARGE van, gets great MPG.

YES it gets tight sometimes in comparison to the others. Sleeping is tricky. But its fun and the children are usually outside anyway. We also have the ability to fit in 1 parking spot and eat lunch. Parking at events is simple.

Yes the Class A and TT are larger and more comfortable when you are at the destination, but we find we go to a LOT less destinations with either of those and somehow choose the class C.

We are in Dallas and have Family in Austin (cousins with children). It's very simple to just hop in the class C and go. No major preps, great for a night out...
