A/C not working on generator

I recently had my 1996 Onan generator replaced and now neither of my A/Cs will work when I exercise my gen. I do have 120 volt power throughout my coach otherwise when it runs. I called the Cummins dealer that did the work and was told to bring it back but I am far enough from there that I hoped to figure out what might be the issue to solve it myself.
The old generator had not worked for 3-4 years so this could be an issue unrelated to the new gen. I have checked all of the breakers / fuses but since they work on 120 shore power it seems it is connected to the gen install.
Any clues as where to look for a wrong or unconnected circuit? Could the transfer switch be at fault? It was cold (30*F) when I had the problem but that was not a problem in the past.
I will appreciate any suggestions!

Yes I suggest that the Roof AC wont work at 30 degrees "F" on any Motorhome wheather gen or shore power
  • If the A/Cs worked before, but not now, then it has to have something to do with the installation. I would take the covers off the A/Cs to see if they have 120V. If they do, then the problem is with the A/C(s) like trop-a-cal said. One of mine was seized up when I first got it. All I had to do was reach up in there and give the squirrel cage a spin by hand. It's worked ever since.

Since you have power at your breaker panel and outlets, if you don't have power at one or both A/Cs, then it would have to be something the installer did incorrectly.

It is a little odd, though, for both not to work. Normally (not sure if this is the case with yours) one A/C would be powered through the breaker box and the other directly from the generator. This way you don't overload your 30A shore power system. You may be able to choose which A/C will run while on shore power like hanko said and there may be a middle position on the switch where neither will run. In my Allegro, however, the switch is to switch between the microwave and front A/C. With the generator running I can turn on both A/C units, but the back one will not run at all on shore power.

Last, the generator should have breakers on it, too. My 6500 has 2 27.4A circuits each with a breaker. One feeds the breaker panel, the other feeds the rear A/C. Since your breaker panel is hot it's not likely the problem, but I'd check anyway.

I could be the fan shaft on the A/C unit is rusted and won't allow the start up of the compressor. Take the shroud off and, with the power off to the A/C unit, turn the shaft without breaking the plastic impellors. That may require using pliers to turn the metal shaft. Then spray the point where the shaft meets the motor bearing with some WD 40, and grease it which fixes the point of bind due to rust. Once the shaft is moving free, then clean the condensation tray,(bottom pan),making sure the weep holes are open and then brush out any thing clogging the cooling fins of the condenser. Replace the shroud and then climb down and turn the A/C unit on. It should start cooling as the shaft is now moving sending a signal to the compressor to start.

Both at the same time? I doubt it. In my old Pace arrow, there was a switch in one of the road side cabinets that dictated which AC you wanted to run, but I do believe that was only if you had a 30 amp service. There might be a both off posistion, so check it
