Allegro Breeze towing

Also looking at a Tiffen Allegro Breeze, probably used. The Tiffen site listed the 32 as having a 4500 tow capacity which seems low for that type vehicle. Maybe it's related to the chassis or perhaps a lighter hitch. I called last week about strapping a motorcycle lift to one and the person there said not recommended. Didn't ask about tow rating. The Phaeton was the smallest but that's more than I want to spend and longer than I want to get. Anyone have one of these and did frame/hitch changes to increase the towing capacity.

Thanks in advance.

  • Well, my friend, I don't wish to burst your bubble, but the hitch is but ONE factor: Consider this...

In general, the maximum amount of weight you can safely tow/haul will be the lesser of the following:

    • the GCWR (gross combination weight rating) of the MH minus the actual weight of the MH as it is loaded for travel (includes fuel, fresh water, food, clothing, people, pets, supplies, etc.)

    • the weight rating of your tow bar

    • the weight rating of your hitch

There are those that subscribe to overloading their vehicles and towing capacities. You can ALWAYS find someone to weld something onto your coach so it will accept whatever you want to place in, on or behind your coach. This does not make it safe however. I would hate to see you BUY the coach, spend a bunch more money on mods, only to find the handling and/or safety of the coach was compromised. There's a reason why mfgs place weight restrictions on their vehicles...some folks think they know more than the engineers who designed these rigs...it's your decision and you'll have to live with it. IMO, buy the correct rig for the lifestyle you want to pursue..BOL...Dennis
  • since I would consider 5,000 to be the norm for a decent Class A to be rated for, there must be some reason it was cut back to 4,500.
the manufacturer knows that reason, don't second guess them.

  • The Breeze is built on Tiffin's in house Power Glide chassis with a Navistar Maxxforce 7 diesel mated with I think an Allison 1100 transmission but it might be a 2200 model. Either transmission is the limiting weight factor for the Breeze.

You're going to need something a bit bigger to hang a lift off the back end. I don't think there is a late model short lenght class A chassis that will do what you are asking.
  • A lot depends on the weight of the motorcycle that you plan to strap on the back. With a 4500 tow capacity, you can probably not add any more than 450-500 pounds TOTAL hanging on the back of your coach, or the approximate maximum tongue weight for that chassis. This will allow you to take some of the small motorcycles/scooters, but certainly not one of the big Harley or Indian bikes.
Adding a lift or tow bar to the rear of the coach will still be limited by the gross COMBINED vehicle weight, which is the manufacturers recommendations on the total weight of your vehicle, when loaded, and the weight of whatever you are towing. I think the numbers may add up where you could add a motorcycle lift and a LIGHTWEIGHT motorcycle and still have the ability to use a tow bar and tow a vehicle in the 3000-3500 pound range.
  • If I went the Breeze route I wouldn't be using the lift attached to the back, instead towing with a tow dolly. Weights add up fast and 4500 can quickly be exceeded. The motorcycle is a HD touring coming in at 900 pounds. I am also aware that designers and manufacturers know their product and limitations. The question was centered around why if anyone knew.

To another line, even with a towing weight of 10K which gives a tongue weight of 1K, with a lift of 2-500 pounds and large touring M/C, no motorhome can handle that if you go by the stated tow limits. You would have to have a tow rating of around 15K to meet that.

  • Don't forget the axle weight limitations also...I have a friend who had a 40' pusher and put a lift on it to haul his dresser and he learned to hate it. Said the stability was too uncomfortable for him to continue driving the coach. He had it removed..costly mistake on his part....Dennis
