Allegro Bus Jack Spring Snapped

Just went outside and cranked everything up to move the coach and discovered that one of the rear jacks on my 1996 Allegro Bus wouldn't retract. Upon closer inspection I discovered that one of the springs on the rear passenger side had snapped and the bottom plate of the jack was being pulled to one side by the remaining spring. I easily extracted the good spring and used a board to compress the piston back into the jack.

Anybody know where I can find a replacement spring? It's 12.5 inches long and 1.75" in diameter.

Also, how hard will the new spring be to install?

Thanks!

Ken
  • Get the part number off the jack. Go to hwh site and get the spring number.I just replaced all of mine. I went to e-bay (there are rv companies selling ) found the correct springs and installed them myself. It is an all day project. Used wooden clothes pins ( took 7 pins pulled apart-14pieces) to insert in the spring after using a come along to expand it.Replace springs extended the jacks and pulled out clothes pins.

It looks like most of the available springs are 14" or 15" long. I removed one of the good ones, and mine are 12" x 1.75". The Tractor Supply idea was a great one, but on the website they only list 14" and 15" springs. I'm going to swing by and see what they have in the store.

I may try to re-use the broken spring. The eye loop just broke off, so I may try to bend it around and make a new loop. The washer idea sounds genius!

Another good idea that I've heard of when replacing those springs is to use spring clothes pins. You just take the springs out and use the wooden parts as wedges in between the spring coils.
  • If the Springs break (rust/worn out) then attempting to use it by modifying it will be a waste of time. Since it has failed and is weak, the odds are you will have that one fail again also. If 1 spring has broken from age/rust, due to the age of the unit, you need to replace all 8 springs. The others will fail in the next year. Doug

  • As far as installing them I installed washers between the links?? to spread out the tension. Took several but an easy install. After connecting on both ends just extend the jacks and the washers fall out. I agree on being able to find them elsewhere. Good Luck Larry
  • you don't need HWH. Tractor supply and Ace hardware will have a good selection of springs. Found one recently for a similar rv. Ebay also has plenty of themsprings
  • What brand jacks? If HWH, give them a call on Monday:

  • Where did the spring break ?I had one of mine snap in the loop where it attaches to the foot plate.I was able to make another loop in the spring by heating it with a propane torch and using pliers to shape it.
