Allison 1000

When i took our coach to an Allison dealer for the first oil change, we talked about changeing over to transynd oil, let see what you have, he came back later and said the good news you have transyd oil. So he changed the oil and replaced the filter. He also said see me in two years for the next oil change and at that time he'll replace the filter that in the transmission.

What am I missing, I didn't see any Dextron III brand products, just the equivalent products. Back to the previous recommendations, Dextron Brand is no longer approved.

Flushing is not recommended by Allison Transmission. I know because I was involved in writing oil recommendations during my time there at Allison Transmission as the Transmission Fluids Engineer (1990-2009).

Fred your link above,- go to "On Highway" transmissions. Select TES389 at the top of the page. It it still shows the Dexron III equivalent TES389 is an approved fluid but does not allow the longer fluid and filter changes. It also lists the brands that have applied for and received Allison's TES 389 blessing...

Arch: The concern is not that Dexron III is no good, it is that some versions of DexIII on the market MAY not meet the specs of the original DexronIII. A long discussion here; Dexron III
Look at post #21 for info on the Chevron MD3.

Allison has an improved transmission fluid and recommends/requires Transynd or an equivalent. The Dexron III formula fluid is still acceptable but Allison states the only way to be certain it meets all the specs of what was the DexIII is to submit the formula to Allison to be listed as an approved TES 389. (They actually require that you provide your prior approval as DexIII as part of the application)
Anyway, there are few TES389 applications or approvals as the only issue for using DexIII is it's use in early Allison tranny's. A limited and fading market.

A for instance- suppose Hijack oil company puts out Dexron VI ATF and decides that since it also exceeds all the specs for DexIII and labels it as "DexIII suitable" for all transmissions requiring DexIII. Some early, prior to 2003?, Allisons cannot use Dex VI because it dissolves the seals. (Allisons are the only ones Dex VI affects)

I satisfied my concern by calling Tech support at Mobil concerning my use of Mobil-1 ATF. You could check with Chevron.. We are both out of warranty. (My next fluid change in 2 years will be with Transynd, I have finally used my stockpile of Mobil-1 Synthetic ATF.)

Well I've used Chevron ATF MD3, which is formulated for use of pre 2005 transmissions that required Dextron III, for 8 years now. I've changed the fluid approximately six times over those years and I'm doing just fine at 66,000 miles.

Again, I'd ask you to point me to a credible source of information that says this is no good.

Dexron 3 was a GM standard, but they let it lapse, did not renew it for some reason.

Today, oil mixers can put a dexron 3 label on anything they choose because there is no standard.
I'd never ever use anything labelled dex3, not even to lube door hinges.

Could you point me to the information that says the formula has changed?

I can't find any information that says that.
