Why not go to the experts? Allison has a website where you can enter your transmission information and the EXPERTS can tell you exactly what fluid is best for your transmission. Allison transmissions
Allison recommends several different transmission fluids, made by numerous manufacturers, that all meet their various standards for TES468, TES389, and TES295.
I don't believe that any of the standards specify engine oil or any of the Amsoil products. Perhaps the engineers at Allison know best what works in their transmission and they do not recommend fluids based on advertising and claims by others.
The "TES295" is the standard I'm used to. And, yes, I too cannot remember the username of the gent who, was involved in all the Allison testing and, also all the developing of Transynd fluid for use in Allison trannys. And no, the claim of changing to a synthetic fluid "does" result in leaks is a bit off. As stated, ours came from the factory with Dexron III and I talked directly with the gent and, he described the actual, Allison approved method for the complete changeover to Transynd.
It's been in our trans now for well over 16,000 miles and not one drop leaks out of it. We've towed over some pretty serious grades, got it pretty darn warm and, no leaks. If one would go to the Allison specs and trans numbers, you'd see that there was a series of I think, MH2000 units that, prior to my year of trans '04, came equipped with Transynd from the factory.
But, also as stated, in any spec I've ever read on Allison TES295, there is a list of manufacturers of Synthetic fluid that is approved by Allison. And, Amsoil, and a select few of others including Transynd, are on that list. But, NO ENGINE OIL! I kind-a would have to see that in writing, directly from Allison, that engine oil is ok to run in their automatic transmissions.
